'If Abronye dies, you will never have peace in your life' – Maurice Ampaw warns judge

Maurice Ampaw says the judge who remanded Abronye will not have peace if he dies Maurice Ampaw says the judge who remanded Abronye will not have peace if he dies

Private legal practitioner, Maurice Ampaw, has criticised judge who remanded the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

According to him, the judge’s decision to remand Abronye despite his alleged health condition was unfair and dangerous.

Speaking on Movement TV and sighted by GhanaWeb, on May 19, 2026, Ampaw questioned why the court would remand Abronye over comments made against a judge.

“Because he referred to your colleague as a political judge, you have remanded a seriously ill person. My Lord, if Abronye dies will you be happy? I don’t know you, but as you sit there, are you able to eat? You have a family and you’re a churchgoer; don’t you get scared about his medical condition?” he asked.

He further accused the judge of punishing Abronye over his comments while forgetting that judicial authority is temporary.

“You are punishing the person because of his comments forgetting that power is transient. The judicial power doesn’t belong to you,” he said.

Ampaw also stated that judges are only caretakers of judicial authority, which he said belongs to the people under the Constitution.

“I’m addressing every judge in this country. Judicial power according to Article 125 of the Constitution doesn’t belong to you but emanates from the people. Justice is the people’s property. You [judges] are just caretakers,” he disclosed.

The lawyer added that judges should not misuse their authority against citizens.

“Every judge is an ordinary Ghanaian who had the privilege to attend law school and gone through the bench and has been given the mandate to become a judge. You can’t lord it over us, you can’t be wicked,” Ampaw stated.

He further claimed that Abronye’s health condition had worsened while in custody.

“Abronye’s medical condition has deteriorated and if he dies, the judge will never have peace. His blood will be on your hands. Has he committed murder?” he expressed worry.

Ampaw also accused the judge of refusing to prepare a court order that would allow Abronye to seek bail at the High Court.

“The painful thing is that this same judge has even refused to draft a court order so at least Abronye can go to the High Court for a bail application,” he revealed.

He insisted that every accused person has a constitutional right to bail.

“Every suspect and accused person has the right to bail,” he said.
