The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has begun integrating heat-resilience measures into its policies as temperatures and heat-related health risks rise in the Greater Accra Region.
The move forms part of a three-day Technical Working Group workshop in Ho, supported by Vital Strategies, as reported by adomonline.com on May 15, 2026.
The workshop reviewed proposals to include heat-health considerations in AMA’s strategic planning, regulatory systems, and coordination mechanisms.
"The initiative responds to the growing threat of extreme heat driven by rapid urbanisation, climate change, population growth, and limited green spaces," AMA said.
The plan will formally recognise extreme heat as a major shock in the Assembly’s resilience framework and embed urban heat concerns into the Medium-Term Development Plan for 2026 to 2029.

Head of Metro Public Health Florence Kuukyi said the Assembly is building stronger data systems to track illnesses and deaths linked to extreme heat.
"AMA, with Vital Strategies under the Partnership for Healthy Cities initiative, is implementing a heat management project to cut heat-related illnesses and deaths," She said,
The workshop also reviewed a draft Heat-Health Action Plan, resilience strategy updates, and proposed amendments to AMA bye-laws.
Presiding Member Musah Ziyad assured stakeholders of AMA’s readiness to back reforms on environmental protection, building development, and public markets.
