Social activist and private legal practitioner, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has called for the immediate summoning of the United States envoy to Ghana following reports about the detention of Asante Akim North MP, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, in the Netherlands.

His reaction follows GhanaWeb's report that the lawmaker’s detention is linked to investigations by the United States government over alleged financial crimes, including money laundering and suspected romance scams.

In a Facebook post reacting to the development on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Barker-Vormawor questioned whether Ghana’s intelligence and diplomatic authorities had been informed before the MP’s arrest abroad.

“If the news that the MP was arrested at the request of the US Government is true, I think we need to summon the US envoy immediately,” he said.

He argued that it would be unacceptable if Ghanaian authorities were not informed ahead of the arrest.

“If they withheld critical information from our intelligence services; and laid traps outside for our officials, then I think it is unacceptable,” he stated.

According to him, Ghana must be treated with respect as a sovereign state.

“We are a sovereign nation that must be treated with respect. Our public officials cannot be plucked away in traps set abroad. Without so much as the courtesy of prior communication,” he added.

Barker-Vormawor also questioned whether the United States would accept a similar situation involving one of its lawmakers.

“Are we sure we could arrange the arrest of a US Congressman under such circumstances?” he asked.

He further criticised what he described as the nature of the relationship between Ghana and the United States in handling such matters.

He warned that the situation could affect diplomatic relations if such actions continue.

“What kind of partnership informs our being treated with so much disrespect! First Ofori-Atta, now this? They have more to lose if they continue like this,” he added.
