The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has inaugurated the interim governing council of Ghana’s “newest” university, the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences, which is located in Bonsu in the Eastern Region.
Speaking at the inauguration of the interim governing council, which is chaired by Kwaku Danso-Boafo, Haruna Iddrisu congratulated the members of the council on their appointment.
He stated that the President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama, wants the council to work to ensure the university commences the enrolment of students by October 30, 2026.

“Your Council has a major responsibility and task. As I've indicated, the President expects that first admission of 800 students into the two major faculties - School of Engineering, probably 400: BSC Electrical Electronic Engineering, BSC Computer Engineering, BSC Mechanical Engineering, BSC Industrial Engineering, and 400 students in the School of Agricultural Sciences: BSC Agronomy, BSC Animal Science, BSC Agric Economics and Agribusiness and BSC Food Production and Nutrition Science, should be on or before October 30 this year. You would have facilitated the admission of the first cohort of students for the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences,” he said.
The minister also pointed out that government is working to ensure that all the remaining works at the university, whose construction started under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2022, are completed.
He stated that the contractor has been given up to May 31, 2026, to complete all ongoing works.
“The contractor should complete work not later than May 31, 2026. So, in a couple of days and weeks, the contractor should complete work. And the work includes a central administration block, a School of Agriculture and School of Engineering block, an Exhibition and Innovation Centre in the library, an assembly hall, cafeteria and VIP accommodation for the Vice Chancellor, the Pro Vice Chancellor and the Registrar.
“And then accommodation for professors and senior staff, male and female student hostels, internal roads and supporting facilities, and some installed educational equipment and ICT infrastructure,” he said.
The Education Minister also disclosed that some members of the governing council, as part of the contract, will receive some training in South Korea to build their capacity.
He also disclosed that the Minister of Finance, Cassiel Ato Forson, has given financial clearance to the council for the recruitment of 150 persons, including members of faculty and other staff.
In a brief remark on behalf of the governing council, the chairperson of the council, Prof Kwaku Danso-Boafo, thanked President Mahama for the appointment.
Prof Kwaku, who is also the Secretary to Ghana’s Cabinet, assured that they would work to ensure that the new university becomes the best in the country, adding that it would play a critical role in Ghana’s development process.
“I am very, very sure that collectively, we will live up to expectation and most likely exceed them. Our predictive experience would definitely propel us to turn the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences into, I'm not going to say, one of the best, but the best.
“We studied the challenges facing the country, the challenges facing the area as a whole, and we indeed put our heads together to come up with the best possible educational system for our students,” he said.
The other members of the governing board are Prof Mark Adom Asamoah, Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Vincent Adzika-Mensah, Nadeene Owusu-Anti, Patience Ama Ganyo, Jerry Sarfo, Eric Hanson Adjei-Sarpong, William Agyei-Manu, Ing. Isaac Bedu, Surv. Yaw Amaning Asante, Member of Parliament Bismark Tetteh Nyarko and Etu Kwesi.
