The Executive Secretary of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Raymond Archer, has dismissed allegations that former National Food Buffer Stock Company Chief Executive Officer Abdul-Wahab Hanan and his wife, Faiza Sayyid Wuni, were prevented from meeting their lawyers while in custody.
His comments come after the couple’s legal team raised concerns over what they described as restricted access to their clients following their re-arrest by EOCO officials.
According to the lawyers, led by former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame, they had been unable to reach the couple for more than 24 hours after the arrest, a situation they argued undermined due process and the rights of the accused.
Hanan and his wife were taken back into custody shortly after the Office of the Attorney General withdrew charges against them.
'Raymond Archer has made EOCO a one-man institution' – Afenyo-Markin claims
Authorities indicated that the decision to re-arrest the couple was based on what they described as fresh evidence connected to ongoing investigations.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on May 9, 2026, Raymond Archer denied claims that EOCO had blocked the couple’s lawyers from accessing them.
“I did not deny Hanan and his wife access to their legal counsel,” he stated, insisting that the office acted within the bounds of the law and followed appropriate investigative procedures.
Addressing concerns that the lawyers were turned away during visiting hours, Archer explained that the legal team arrived at EOCO’s premises at a time when other individuals were already being attended to.
According to him, by the time the lawyers arrived, earlier visitors were already seated and going through the required processes.
He noted that those individuals completed their engagements and left after the lawyers for Abdul-Wahab Hanan had already departed.
Archer further clarified that once EOCO officials finished attending to the earlier visitors, efforts were made to locate Hanan’s legal team so they could proceed with the necessary processes. However, he said the lawyers had already left the premises.
He maintained that the situation was purely procedural and not an attempt to deny the couple access to legal representation.
