The Mayor of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced plans to employ 30 young athletes and establish an official AMA sports team to promote sports development and youth empowerment.
The announcement was made during a ceremony organized to honour the arm-wrestling team that won 168 medals at the 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship in Accra.
Addressing the gathering, Michael Kpakpo Allotey praised the athletes for their remarkable achievement, describing them as patriots who successfully defended the image of Ghana through sports.
According to him, the athletes’ success deserved recognition and support. He stated that when the team’s leadership first approached him years ago with plans to develop the sport, he challenged them to prove themselves by winning medals.
Allotey said the athletes exceeded expectations by winning 168 medals, prompting the Assembly to reward and support them.
He disclosed that the AMA would recruit 30 members from the team to work and earn an income while continuing their sporting careers.
The Mayor added that the selected athletes would begin work from Monday after their leaders complete the selection process.

The Municipal Chief Executive for the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, Alfred Allotey-Gaisie, also reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to supporting sports development.
He explained that the Assembly intends to engage unemployed young athletes in productive activities while encouraging them to continue pursuing sports.
