'We keep buying transformers, but where's the clarity?' – ACEP

Executive Director of ACEP, Benjamin Boakye has questioned about how power sector issues are explained to the public, especially around transformers.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, he questioned the common claim that faulty transformers are the main reason for outages.

“The communication has always been that transformers are dead and need replacement,” he said, as monitored by MyNewsGh.

He challenged that position, arguing that transformer replacement is often about capacity, not failure.

“When a community outgrows a transformer, you replace it or move it to a lower load area. It doesn’t mean the transformer is dead,” he explained.

Benjamin Boakye also questioned what happens to removed equipment.

“What happens to the transformers that are taken down? Are all of them dead?” he asked.

He said the continuous purchase of new transformers without clear explanations raises concerns.

“We are buying thousands of transformers all the time, and we are not told where the old ones are going,” he added.

On communication, he admitted that some efforts have been made, but gaps remain.

“I’ve seen timetables around, communicating that there is load shedding,” he said.

However, he pointed out that in some cases, the real causes are not disclosed.

“There are times we had generation deficit, and that was not communicated to the public,” he stated.
