Former Ghana international, Daniel Opare has revealed how a mistimed injury denied him a breakthrough at Real Madrid.

Opare joined the Spanish giants in 2008 from AshantiGold SC after impressing at the 2007 FIFA U17 World Cup.

He quickly joined first-team training during a right-back shortage and was poised to make an appearance.

"There were a lot of red cards and then injuries in the Madrid team. So I started training with the first team a long time ago," he told Joy Sports.

His chance appeared imminent after he trained with the group set to play. But 48 hours before the match, he suffered a serious injury in training.

"When that opportunity came, I thought, 'okay, this is it' because looking at that week, I was training with the team that was going to play the match," he said.

"I was about to cross the line, and with the speed at which I crossed the ball and was landing, I twisted my ankle, but I didn't have pain in my ankle."

"I rather broke my metatarsal. I suffered a fracture. There was nothing I could do, and the only option was to undergo surgery."

Daniel Opare spent two years at Read Madrid but never made a senior appearance, with the injury ending his immediate hopes of breaking into the first team.
