Senior Researcher at Kumasi Technical University (KTU), Prof Smart Sarpong, has advised Chief of Staff Julius Debrah to overcome what he describes as emotional limitations, which he believes could affect him as a potential National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer hopeful.
According to him, the Chief of Staff needs to better control his emotions, as his public displays of emotion may not be suitable for leadership at the highest level.
He cited several instances in which Julius Debrah has been seen crying publicly, stating that such a trait may not be ideal for a national leader.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on April 28, 2026, Prof Sarpong said, “The twist I have is in the person of the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah.
“In fact, he appeared on the list of potential aspirants for the upcoming flagbearership. So, if he wins and becomes President, is this how he is going to cry? Because all sorts of things will be said against you when you are President… maybe he is too emotional; I think he should toughen himself up.”

He continued, “When Dr Omane Boamah and Murtala Mohammed died, Julius Debrah cried. His sibling also died and he cried. So, I am surprised at the pattern. If you become President, a lot will be said about you, will you cry? Maybe he is too emotional, so he needs to toughen up a bit.”
Prof Sarpong’s comments follow an earlier incident in which the Chief of Staff publicly apologised to the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost after the Free Zones Authority CEO, Mary Awusi, criticised him over remarks on galamsey.
During the apology at the Church of Pentecost auditorium at East Legon on his birthday, Julius Debrah was visibly emotional and broke down in tears.
