The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has issued a one-week ultimatum to all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to remove unauthorised billboards across the Greater Accra Region as part of efforts to sanitise the advertising space.
The directive was given by the Deputy Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, during an inspection tour by the Technical Committee on the Regularisation and Sanitisation of Billboards and Signages on April 28, 2026.

She expressed worry over the growing clutter of billboards across the region, warning that the situation does not reflect well on the country’s image or urban planning standards.
“When we look around, the place is so cluttered and it does not speak well of us as a nation, as a Ministry, as districts. We’ve engaged the MMDCEs and they’ve assured us they are going to declutter the entire space,” she said.
Naa Odoley Sowah stressed the need for proper management of advertising spaces.
“The advertising space is one area that needs to be well managed. When we are looking at urban development, these are all areas we need to look at. We just don’t have to focus on buildings and other areas, but the advertising space is one area we need to ensure is well managed. The MMDCEs have assured us that within a week, especially in the areas we visited, they will take action,” she added.
The Ministry has indicated that it will continue monitoring the exercise closely to ensure full compliance across all affected districts, as part of a broader push to regulate outdoor advertising in the Region.
