A video showing ongoing illegal mining near a school has surfaced on social media, sparking outrage among some Ghanaians over the situation that exposed pupils to danger.
The footage, believed to be part of a documentary by international media outlet Deutsche Welle (DW), shows miners searching for gold close to a basic school in Wassa Akropong in the Upper Denkyira West constituency.
Adamus Resources denies galamsey claims, challenges lease revocation
The uncompleted school building is located within a community surrounded by mining activities which could collapse the school.
Heavy-duty equipment, including excavators and changfans, and pumping machines can be seen operating just behind the school.
The activities have left large pits and heaps of sand in the area, posing serious danger to students who may not be aware of the risks.
According to the report, school authorities appear helpless, as their attempts to get the relevant authorities to act have failed.
Additionally, the situation has reportedly caused water sources in the school to be unsafe due to the dust.
“School authorities tell me they are helpless against the influence of the miners. The use of heavy-duty machinery creates plumes of dust. The water is unsafe, and the mounds of sand could easily collapse on the school,” the report stated.

“Sadly, the school has had to relocate once because mining was getting too close to their buildings. But that is happening all over again,” it added.
