The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has suspended his planned “Thank You Tour” of the North East Region amid growing security concerns following a recent attack on a military convoy in Bawku.
The decision, confirmed by a senior member of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to JoyNews, on April 29, 2026, comes after consultations over the worsening security situation in the area.
Tensions have been high, particularly after an incident in Binduri, where unknown assailants reportedly attacked a military escort convoy.
The two-day tour, which was meant to bring the party closer to its grassroots supporters, was scheduled to begin on April 29, 2026, with visits to Yagaba, Walewale, and Nalerigu, before continuing on April 30, 2026, to Bunkpurugu, Yunyoo, and Chereponi.
For many supporters who had been preparing to welcome the Chairman, the cancellation comes as a disappointment but security officials insist safety comes first.
“Anytime there are disturbances, there are spillover effects. To be safe, we have decided to avoid the trip and focus on finding a lasting solution to these issues.
“We cannot downplay the situation, but there are other equally important engagements,” he disclosed.
The “Thank You Tour” is part of Asiedu Nketiah’s efforts to reconnect with party faithful after the elections, to acknowledge their support and strengthen ties within the region.
However, the current security climate has made such engagements difficult.
The Bawku enclave has, in recent times, experienced recurring violence, and the latest attack involving military personnel has only deepened fears among residents.
