The President of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), John Ansah, has said that the Ghana Premier League is one of the best in Africa.

According to him, although there have been criticisms about the quality of the league due to certain setbacks, he believes it remains among the best on the continent.

He argued that players from the league have often earned call-ups to the Black Stars and proved their worth, citing the recent qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as an example.

Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV, he called on Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz to prioritize local players when planning squad selection, in order to boost their confidence.

“If I recollect, in 2022, we had one player from Kotoko and one from Hearts of Oak who were fully local-based. During the qualification, you realize that some were also given opportunities, leading to qualification for the 2026 World Cup. We have just a few months to go. A new coach has been appointed."

“I don’t know much about his plan, but I believe he might consider doing the same or even more. The local league, sometimes we complain it’s not the best, but if you look around the continent, we are among the best. So I think there’s much room for improvement.”

He further urged local clubs to invest in enhancing stadium infrastructure to give players the best experience and help them compete well at the national level.

“My clubs too have to play a major role in improving this. You go to some venues and you can see that much work needs to be done. They start, but instead of improving, it either remains static or they don’t even bother. It all boils down to giving players confidence to do more,” John Ansah said.
