Former Subin MP and NPP General Secretary aspirant, Eugene Boakye Antwi, says the party failed to rise to the occasion despite handing leadership space to younger figures.

In an interview snippet shared by Citi FM on X, Boakye Antwi did not hold back, declaring that the party’s internal direction faltered at a critical time.

“We gave the youth the chance to come and lead this party and they left it aground,” he said.

Though he stopped short of directly blaming individuals, he stressed that the party failed to effectively communicate its achievements and connect with voters, particularly the youth, in an election that proved decisive.

Boakye Antwi argued that the NPP was overwhelmed by key national issues during the campaign, including debates around LGBTQ+ rights, illegal mining (galamsey), and economic hardships shaped partly by global tensions such as the Russia-Ukraine War.

According to him, these issues were not new, yet the party struggled to counter the narratives effectively.

He contrasted the situation with the early years of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, pointing to flagship interventions like the Free SHS programme as examples of impactful governance that, in his view, were poorly communicated to the electorate.

“That is why I'm before my people and the good people of this country, that these were certain things that we could not; we did not deal with properly or effectively. We failed to communicate the works of Akufo-Addo… what didn't Akufo-Addo do? What hasn't Akufo-Addo done for this country? But it's like, oh, we are seen as corrupt; they were stealing,” he questioned.

He further lamented what he described as a reversal of political narratives between the NPP and its main rival, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), arguing that accusations once levelled against the opposition are now being directed at his party.

“It’s like we have traded places,” he said.

Eugene Boakye Antwi also pointed to what he described as public silence on major policy and economic issues, including the country’s engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He emphasised that the scale of the defeat of over two million votes should serve as a wake-up call.

“We didn’t lose by 200,000 or 300,000 votes; we lost by 2.1 million,” he stressed.

Despite the sharp criticisms, he reaffirmed his belief in the party’s core values, describing the NPP as one that respects the rule of law and embraces ideas.

However, he, insisted that those ideals must be matched with effective communication and decisive leadership.
