Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has promised that Parliament will pass the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, when it returns to the House for reconsideration.

Speaking at a forum on April 11, 2026, he stated, "A number of members of Parliament who believe in it decided to promote it in Parliament. And you know the things I said before.

"I'm not a man of words. I'm a man of action, and that is how we got it passed in Parliament."

Mixed emotions as Ghanaians weigh in on anti-LGBTQ+ Bill

Bagbin explained that although Parliament approved the bill earlier, it was not assented to by the former president, a situation he suggested had political undertones.

"For some reason, the president did not sign it...I'm sure one of the reasons why we punished him and his party. So we started, and we processed it. It has gone through all the stages, and at the next meeting of Parliament, we shall pass it", he remarked

He indicated that the bill will return to the House for reconsideration as part of ongoing parliamentary processes.

The Speaker urged the public to disregard misinformation about Parliament, insisting that many commentators misunderstand how legislative work is done.

Bagbin maintained that Parliament remains committed to protecting Ghana’s democratic values and resisting undue political pressure.

The legislation aims to proscribe LGBTQ+ activities and criminalise their promotion, advocacy, and funding.

Individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ could face 6 months to 3 years in prison.
