More details have surfaced following the divorce of Ghanaian business mogul Richard Nii Armah Quaye and his ex-wife, Joana Coffie.

Court documents and videos that have surfaced online detail allegations that businessman Richard Nii Armah Quaye verbally, emotionally, and physically abused his ex-wife during their marriage.

According to the documents, sometime in June 2014, Quaye allegedly assaulted his ex-wife shortly after she gave birth to twins.

Joana Coffie’s mother, who served as a witness to one of the alleged incidents, recounted that her daughter was beaten after requesting that her husband transfer ownership of a car he had gifted her following the delivery.

“One day, I was with the parties’ children when I heard the petitioner crying out from the couple’s bedroom. I rushed to knock on the door, and the respondent came out and said there was no problem. However, upon my persistent questioning as to why the petitioner was crying, the respondent, who had a belt in his hand all that while, stated that he established his business because of his mother and sister, and so if the petitioner misbehaves, he will keep beating her.

“He added that he had acquired a brand-new car for her, a Jaguar, as appreciation for safely delivering the twins, but the petitioner insisted that he transfer ownership of the car into her name, which generated an argument between them,” she said.

The document also includes testimony from another witness, identified as Alfred Ankrah, who reportedly had a close relationship with the family for about nine years.

It further noted that Ankrah used to deposit the couple’s business earnings into the bank every Friday.

He was said to have confirmed several instances in which the business mogul allegedly assaulted his ex-wife, leading to visible injuries.

“During the course of the couple’s marriage, I witnessed several forms of abuse and domestic violence meted out by the respondent against the petitioner. I have seen the respondent beating her with a belt. I can recall occasions when the respondent attempted to beat the petitioner in my presence, and I had to restrain him.

“On one occasion, the respondent wanted to beat the petitioner because he was angered that she had informed his mother about providing him with start-up capital for Quick Credit,” the statement detailed.

Alfred Ankrah added in his witness account that Richard Nii Armah Quaye allegedly assaulted his former wife during the Christmas season in the presence of his mother.

“I noticed that the petitioner had bloodstains in her nostrils, puffy eyes, and a swollen face. The next morning, when I asked what had happened, she tried to cover up for the respondent by saying she had been in a car crash.

“On another occasion, the respondent beat the petitioner severely, even in the presence of his own mother,” the statement expressed.

He also alleged that the respondent verbally abused his former wife, at one point stating that he regretted marrying her.

“…that the marriage was useless and that he would one day divorce her to live a single life because, according to him, marriage was like a prison.”

Joana Coffie also recounted, per the document, how her former husband verbally abused her by referring to her as a drunkard, a prostitute, and someone who had achieved nothing in life.

Meanwhile, a video of Joana Coffie has resurfaced online, where she was seen being physically assaulted with marks on her face and body.
