Learned people o African origin and Whites alike were actively involved. Ashanti’s contribution was immense although they scaled back from the political front during the period that most Southerners, especially Nzema, Ahanta and Fante were involved. Where was Ayigbe then? Mention one name. These Southerners, including Ga and much later Ewe, had a long history of collaborating with the Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Danes and the British. Ashanti never welcomed the colonists because they had come to disrupt state or kingdom formation in our own African and natural ways. They should have left us to fight, create alliances and settle our borders. Among the inland Akans, only Akyem Abuakwa participated in the colonial struggle the way the Southerners did.
