First Lady of Ghana, Lordina Mahama, has highlighted Ghana’s leadership in Africa’s efforts to balance rapid digital expansion with strong safeguards to protect children online.
Speaking at the Fostering the Future Together Global Coalition Summit in Washington, DC, in the USA, on March 25, 2026, Lordina Mahama said Ghana’s approach focuses on ensuring that increasing internet access does not expose young people to heightened digital risks.
She noted that with internet penetration reaching 68 percent, the country is implementing targeted measures to address threats such as sextortion, disinformation and online abuse, while still promoting the benefits of digital technology for education and innovation.

“With 68% internet penetration according to recent GSMA data, Ghana is leading Africa in balancing digital expansion with safeguards against threats, including sextortion, disinformation, and online abuse,” she said.
According to her, Ghana’s strategy is anchored in its 2025 national digital policy, which includes school-based digital literacy programmes and partnerships with global technology firms such as Meta and Google to enhance content moderation and user safety.
Lordina Mahama emphasised that the growing number of young internet users makes it imperative for governments to prioritise child protection in the digital space.
She further called for strengthened international cooperation to ensure safer online environments for children, stressing that safeguarding their digital future remains a shared global responsibility.
