Who came to Egypt as a labourers and traders? Who invaded our ancient civilisation and plundered all of North Africa? What led to the fall of African Kingdoms south of Egypt? Who traded with Kush, Aksum and Nubia before invading them one after another? What is the history of Sudan? Who destroyed Old Ghana Empire and installed a Muslim Dynasty? Did the Arabs not arrive in Ghana as labourers and traders? From Senegal to Nigeria, what happened to indigenous Africans? They turn converts on the own people and massacre, wipe out millions in the name of religion. The Trans Saharan Slave Trade, the East African Slave Trade and the slave route across the Horn of Africa devastated our continent and people more than the Atlantic Trade but our leaders cannot speak up. Today, we are witnessing Arabs giving support to fanatics to continue killing indigenous people across Africa. It is happening live as we talk only of what Christian nations did.

Here are the facts:
Africans were brought to Europe as slaves long before the transatlantic slave trade. The practice goes back to antiquity, but it happened in several distinct periods:
1. Classical Antiquity (Ancient Greece and Rome)
• As early as the time of the Roman Empire (roughly 27 BCE–476 CE), Africans—especially from North Africa and regions south of the Sahara—were enslaved and transported into Europe.
• Enslavement often followed wars, trade, or piracy. However, slavery in this era was not based on race in the modern sense; people from many regions were enslaved.
2. Early Middle Ages (c. 500–1000 CE)
• After the fall of Rome, slave trading continued through Mediterranean and trans-Saharan networks.
• North African and Middle Eastern traders brought sub-Saharan Africans into parts of southern Europe, especially via Islamic territories like Al-Andalus (Muslim-ruled Spain).
3. Late Middle Ages (c. 1300s–1400s) — the first large-scale racialized slavery in Europe
• A key turning point came in the 15th century with Portuguese expansion along the West African coast.
• In 1444, a Portuguese expedition led by Lançarote de Freitas brought a large group of enslaved Africans to Lagos in Portugal—one of the first well-documented mass arrivals of sub-Saharan Africans in early modern Europe.
• This marked the beginning of a more systematic trade that would later expand into the transatlantic slave system.

Obiri Boahen is a blockhead who doesn't use his brain. Nobody is saying that slavery started with or by the West, slavery existed long before the time of Jesus Christ - long before Jesus was born, across major parts of the globe. But the scale and inhumane nature at which it was done that captured the attention of the entire world is what has become known as the period of Slave Trade, or Slavery for short, and that mainly involved the Europeans. Can Obiri Boahen point out any part of the world where any other groups of people (apart from Europeans) built bunkers and castles purposely for slave trade? Or can Obiri Boahen tell us any other group of people who brought bib, big slave ships (ships built purposely for slave trade) to the shore of Africa to invade provinces and capture people by force and take them away as slaves? Or can he point out any other part of the world that built their countries and their economies with the sweat of enslaved people?

Who were the prominent slave traders in the ashanti kingdom from 1700 to 1890s?
Prominent slave traders in the Ashanti (Asante) Kingdom between 1700 and the 1890s were primarily elite state officials, including the Asantehene (King) and regional chiefs, who utilized war captives and regional raids to supply the Atlantic trade. Key rulers such as Osei Bonsu (reigned 1801–1824) built their economy on this trade to secure European firearms.
Asantehene (Kings): The Asantehene, starting with Osei Tutu and his successor Opoku Ware, held central authority over slave procurement, treating it as a state-sanctioned institution.
Elite Chiefs/Intermediaries: Regional officials and war leaders (like the Denkyira and Asen chiefs, before being absorbed by Asante) operated as middlemen, leading raids against neighboring groups (e.g., the Fante) to sell captives for luxury items and firearms.
The Northern Trade Routes: In the early 1700s, trade was directed north to Mande and Hausa traders.
The Southern Trade Routes: By the 1800s, the trade shifted south, where the Asante dealt heavily with British, Dutch, and French agents to exchange captives for guns and manufactured goods.
Key Historical Context:
Asantehene Osei Bonsu (1801-1824): Led major efforts to supply slaves to meet British and European demand, ensuring the empire's dominance through firearms obtained from the trade.
Slave Trade Dynamics: The Asante sold captives primarily acquired through military campaigns and tributes from conquered neighboring tribes, transforming the kingdom into a key supplier, especially when gold trade fluctuated.
End of Trade: The trade was curtailed by British military pressure in the late 19th century, culminating in the exile of Prempeh I in 1896 and the abolition of the trade under British colonial rule.
Key figures included the ruling class in Kumasi (the capital), who managed the organized capture of residents from neighboring kingdoms and tribes.
