Those who truly suffered are gone. A million apologies for that evil done to them.
Kudos to President Mahama for getting it done by the world by their representatives at the UN.
No Reparations, let's move on.

I am so so disappointed in this position that Manasseh has taken. This has in effect terminated the prestige and the respect that many enlightened Ghanaians - and I am inclined to believe, many other Africans as well. His crass opinion has sadly exposed him as lacking in intellectual thought and common sense.
Does Manasseh not know the simple fact that even for resisting the criminal imposition of foreign religions as against maintaining their local traditional religions, many hundreds of thousands of native Africans throughout the continent were mercilessly slaughtered over time until they eventually gave in to European missionaries? Today, proper black-skinned Africans, vehemently reject all forms of African religion and rather favor foreign religions with alien spiritual icons.
In the same context, African tribal leaders were similarly threatened with enslavement and death themselves by white slave merchants if they did not supply certain quantities of slaves at specific times of convenience to the European missionaries and traders. This forced many tribal leaders to steal people or invade other tribes at the least pretext to make the quota of slaves that had been demanded of them by the Europeans, to save their own lives, their families as well as their own clansmen and and tribesmen. Over several decades and centuries, the slave trade, as evil as it was, became normalized in the conscience of Africans. It was at this point that the term "mental slavery" became evident. Manasseh, unfortunately, is an unwitting victim of this syndrome.
The ensuing chaos, emanating from the greed of unfair and inhuman trade practices at the time, spiraled into unnecessary enmity between various tribes which had otherwise lived peacefully together. Strains of that enmity still persist to today, hundreds of years later.
So for people like Manasseh and indeed, some of those African "intellectuals" whose misinformation he dwells upon to wrongly assume that Africans willingly opted to engage in slavery, is to say the least, most unfortunate and despicable.
To end, let me juxtapose the power play of foreign forces during the period of the slave to even today's hegemonic dictatorship of the IMF, the US dollar, some private multinational organizations, some militarily powerful countries and even some wealthy individuals who hold dominion over.
If Manasseh truly wants to know what it was like to be in the shoes of those Africans who were threatened to comply with the slave is like, I dare him to write just one single objective article on the ensuing crisis in the Middle East.

Who were the prominent slave traders in the Ashanti Kingdom from 1700 to 1890s.?
Prominent slave traders in the Ashanti (Asante) Kingdom between 1700 and the 1890s were primarily the Asantehene (kings) and state officials, who controlled the supply of captives to European traders (British, Dutch) in exchange for firearms and luxury goods. Key rulers driving this trade included Osei Tutu I, Opoku Ware I, and Osei Bonsu, who capitalized on military conquests to secure enslaved people, particularly after the trade shifted southward toward the coast by the 1800s.
Key Actors/Agents: The Asantehene (monarch) and authorized chiefs managed the slave trade as a key state enterprise to solidify political power and obtain weapons..
Expansionist Policy: Expansionist policies under kings like Opoku Ware resulted in the subjugation of neighboring tribes (such as the Bono State and Denkyira), which were frequently forced to pay tribute in slaves..
Shifting Trade Routes: While initial 18th-century trade often involved northern routes, by 1800, the Ashanti were major suppliers to coastal trading castles.
End of Trade: The trade was maintained by the state until the British destroyed the power of the Asantehene with the capture of Kumasi and exile of King Prempeh I in 1896..
The Ashanti were key players in the network, selling captives obtained through war and raiding, which was essential to maintaining their military strength and economic stability throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

Manasseh is a true House Niger and Uncle Tom to the core. One of those Africans who think because they can successfully stitch together a few sentences in English, they are somehow experts. Manasseh should investigate the psych-social antecedents of the transatlantic slave trade. Before the Europeans made a market for large scale slavery, what was the state of slavery in Africa?
Manasseh is blind to real trends in the global space. He still hasn’t discovered that race is at the heart of almost everything that happens internationally. The white race is doing everything it can to preserve its dominance. Doing everything to present itself in the best possible light, including rewriting history and in some cases fabricating history in order for them to look good. Manasseh needs to wake up and smell the coffee. Does Manasseh think there no Jews complicit in the holocaust? Many Jews were found out to have sold out their compatriots for money, for security etc, and yet you never hear fellow Jews making such information public. The reason is to preserve and maintain a certain narrative of victimhood and innocence. It is the same reason why the founding fathers of the USA are painted as angels when the facts indicate otherwise. We know those of them who owned slaves(some even raped their slaves to produce children) and yet they wrote a beautiful declaration of independence stating that “all men are created equal”. We now know they didn’t believe in that. We now know they believe the black man was worth four-fifths of a white man. We now know they didn’t believe a man without property should have an equal vote as one with property. And yet their history has been whitewashed to make them appear saintly and worthy of adoration.
I’m simply saying all these things to say that we do not wash our dirty linen in public. Yes a few black Africans were complicit in the whole sordid slave affair but it is not Manasseh’s place to go trumpeting it at the top of his voice. Did Manasseh’s so-called research also reveal for example that many Africans attempted several rescue expeditions? That in Benin for example, the King sent emissaries who got lost on the high seas? But history has conveniently ignored those facts and continues to harp on the facts that make us black Africans look bad. But an Uncle Tom like Manasseh instead of digging deeper to find the truth, instead of standing by his people, will rather selfishly take the eay way out. He is nothing but a sellout.

Manasseh Azure’s works, as they say, has not aged well. From flying guinea fowls to Ford Explorer gifts, his veracity has come into question. Nowhere in the resolution is there mention of paying restitution to Ghana or African countries. It calls for ‘reparative justice’. It is true that some African ethnic groups sold their brothers for trinkets and guns to fight tribal wars. The profits (centuries of free labor as beasts of burden etc) made by the European and Americans can hardly be compared to the pittance these despicable Africans made. To ignore this and equate the two can only come from the mind of an apologist for the oppressor. He says the Caribbeans and African Americans deserve reparations. It doesn’t even cross his mind to advocate for reparations for the ethnic groups in his own country that were enslaved. Their plight today is even much worse than their kinsfolk in the diaspora. What about the stigma that slavery placed on the black skin?. Something we all suffer, including Manasseh.

A philosopher might say the real question is not “who sold the slaves,” but who built and profited from the system. While some African intermediaries played a role, European powers industrialized and enriched themselves from slavery and later deepened the damage through colonial rule. That imbalance keeps the case for reparations alive—because justice is not erased by shared guilt; it is measured by the scale of benefit and harm.
My beloved Africa, reparations without reform is pouring water into a leaking basket. If corruption, weak institutions, and poor leadership persist, no amount of compensation will change outcomes. The fight, then, is twofold—demand justice from history, but fix the house at home.

The blood of those men and women who were shipped across the ocean still cry from the earth! Can you see the effect on us? I remember a great scientist who came up with an intelligent genetic engineering approach that made yam 7 times bigger you thought.... After all his research and modifications, he still didn't believe in himself. He had to send his research, methodology and his capabilities to the whites for verification and approval. That's how he lost his great idea, simply because he didn't believe in himself. All these sprang from inferiority complex. Till today, if something is not done or approved by a Whiteman, it's not valid. This is one of the effects of mental slavery. No wonder, growing up, we were told that when you had a dream seeing a white man, it's a symbol of an evil spirit.

Manasseh you did yourself a disservice by not researching further into history before making your comments. Are you aware that there was a concerted agreement among Europeans including the papacy concerning their modus operandi before embarking on the slave trade? Granted that some Africans were also complicit in capturing some of the slaves, can you compare that to an institution determined to exploit by any means necessary? Learn about those who gained from slavery. In Britain alone, the Anglican church, the banks and other financial institutions. Not to talk of the European countries- Portugal, Spain, France, etc. Maybe if you read a bit about the scramble for Africa, it may serve as a point of reflection. Your writing is very bold and very myopic. It lacks depth.

Manasseh is right! There's no trade without the supplier and buyer working on mutual terms. Africa definitely played a key role in selling out ourselves as slaves and shouldn't be making attempt to absolve ourselves from the blame. The world realized long time ago that slave trade was a crime against humanity and abolished it. The fact that nations and people are accorded the right to self determination is sufficient, and that we should advocate always. Now, the real form of slavery that is holding Africa behind is the exploitation of people by the political elite; pilfering state resources and turning tribes against tribes for political gains. Those should be the concerns of John Dramani. Our corruption and growing atmosphere of nepotism is internal, and not externally motivated. If we can't manage the resources we have nor unite the people for common development agenda, no amount of external reparation can fix our problems. Even the reparation will end up enriching the same corrupt politicians while the ordinary African languish in poverty. In any case, any form of external compensation to repair the damages of slave trade should be in the form of scholarships to the needy, and provision of basic amenities to deprived communities through non-governmental organizations, and capacity building programs. Not cash money which will be used to buy votes to continue the cycle of operation! We can't build a prosperous nation if our leaders are interested in property-gathering rather than building systems that are good enough to address the needs of everyone.

Besides, the ordinary person will not benefit from reparations because the leaders will steal everything!

Educate yourself. Columbus was not a missionary. Those who engaged in the Trans Atlantic slave trade were not missionaries or preachers. They were ruthless, vicious private merchants, sanctioned by the colonial governments. They mostly didn't care about the Bible or the Gospel, though some misinterpreted and misused Bible verses here and there in pursuit of their selfish interests, just like many Ghanaians do today.
The missionaries and the Church were a different and separate entity. They made some compromises here and there, in some cases. Blame your wicked ancestors and the real European criminals who participated in that evil act, not the Church.
Many of you are insulting Manasseh because he called your evil ancestors for their role. You don't want to take any responsibility. You don't want any accountability. You conveniently shift all blame upon all others but your ancestors.

You have made a simple point true or not, the bigger question is - What was the white man doing on the coast of Ghana, building huge castles, trading guns and setting cannons on the coast of Africa? and how did the local tribes including Asantes, come to know he was buying slaves? Who brought this large scale industry and how did this market commence, by diplomacy or by colonial conquest? Answering these questions will show the full picture.

It's unfortunate Manase Azure has become a useless journalist. Vincent Assiseh will classify him as an educated illiterate. Buyers encourage stealing. Have seen a seller without a buyer? In Aneraca, criminals don't break into houses to steal electrical appliances because there are no buyers. If your phone falls, it will be sent to a drop box. Nobody will buy a stolen phone. About 80% of the slaves were kidnapped from the north. A reason the black Americans are violent and behave like the Northerners. If there were no buyers, who would have gone to kidnap women and children to sell? Mannase just want to be headed because Mahama has spoken. Jealousy and stupidity. Is mannaseh more intelligent than those who voted for the proposal? Shame on Mannase Azure, a northerner. Azure, you can never be southerner if you even change the Azure.

Multiple groups being involved means shared responsibility, not innocence. Many victims were kidnapped or forced, they had done nothing wrong. African societies existed, it wasn’t “people selling their own” in a simple way, it was systems. Don’t belittle the argument with this basic argument.

Slavery has been from the earliest times of human settlement, not only in Africa, but throughout the world in amongst all people's. You can read from the Bible book of Genesis. Africans were enslaving themselves before the whites came. Think/read about it. When one kingdom, state, tribe, clan defeats another in a war, what happened to the defeated? Enslaved for hard labour or sold, after killing those who threaten. Slavery reached its peak when labour was need for the plantations in Brazil and the Carribbean. Almost all the time, it is black communities that attacked their fellow blacks, captured them and matched them to the coasts to sell them to the whites. On a few occasions, families sold their members deemed unprofitable or due to debt. The whites then transported them to the Americas and also sold them. Slavery was not only profitable to the indigenous African, it was also a sign of power and freedom. Left to the African warlords, slavery would never be abolished as they played absolutely no role in making it illegal. Today, though not through conquest and transportation overseas on a large scale, slaves are still made in Africa. People (children) are still sold and forced into labour even in our capital cities. Find out from the many child beggars on the streets (making money for their masters although not in sugarcane plantations in Brazil) and you will understand that slavery has not really left Africa. Slavery is still in parts of Asia, even renowned places like UAE, Qatar etc where black maidens seeking jobs that their African governments couldn't provide end up enslaved, some with the task of sleeping with dogs. Those of us crying today for reparations, our grandfathers sold the slaves and profited from it. We are still causing our fellows today to go into slavery. If there should be reparation, HE J. D. Mahama as the first gentleman of the land should make the first payment to the blacks in the Americas whose grandfathers were victims.
My biggest challenge is why Africans of today think the Transatlantic slavery is the cause of their present predicaments? We have countless opportunities to develop but selfishness and greed is destroying us. Quantifying the wrongs of the Transatlantic Slavery and seeking reparation in terms of material gains will not change our story one bit, if we remain in the same attitude. Granted we are given all the money in the world, are you sure it will trickle down to the betterment of life for everyone or only a few will benefit from it greatly?
A change in mindset is for me what we need, not reparation

I agree with the author. If leaders of the Africa countries have been able to identify the countries and people involved in the slave trade, they must be able to identify families in their African countries who sold and facilitated that business and ask them for reparations or whatever they are selling from slave masters.
Even now, our own leaders oversee terrorism within. Akuffo-Addo killing over 20 people for power is more than slavery. People selling fellow human beings for money and voodoo.
People from Africa countries transported for sex work and others charged huge sums of money for visas to work in the diaspora for peanuts until they pay to the last penny.
Reparation is a wrong move. It probably could be something else.

Manasseh, some of your points are valid, but saying our ancestors were major accomplices in the slave trade is wholly inaccurate. You see what western education can do to inferior minds? I know you had to write stuff to exonerate your white professors and get good marks but what you're saying is equal to the false claims that Jews helped the Germans during the holocaust. During the slave trade, there was nothing a like the country Ghana, we had a collection of tribes fighting among themselves for dominance over resource-rich areas. Don't be a coconut bro, our ancestors resisted with all their might, the first Fanti king to resist was killed by the invaders and his palace was burnt to ashes. Ever heard of divide and conquer? Your friends allied with some tribal kings and gave them weapons in exchange for slaves but that accounted for less than 5% of our siblings taken away. These people trying to clear their conscience went on raids, armed to the teeth to capture Africans and you have been brainwashed to believe them, just incredible.

Manasseh needs to re-take his history lessons. What a poor argument to make. Here are the key points for why call for Africa's compensation for the trade slave makes sense:
Justification for Africa’s call for Compensation
• Scale and Organization: The transatlantic slave trade was designed, financed, and industrialized by European powers. Local collaborators were involved, but the system was driven by European demand, shipping networks, and colonial economies.
• Imbalance of Power: Many African rulers or traders participated under pressure, manipulation, or unequal trade conditions. Europeans had superior weapons and global markets, which created coercive dynamics.
• Profits and Legacy: The greatest economic benefits went to Europe and the Americas — building industries, cities, and wealth — while Africa was left impoverished and destabilized.
• Human Rights Violation: Regardless of collaboration, the trade was fundamentally a crime against humanity. Responsibility lies with those who created and sustained the system.
• Precedent in Law: International justice recognizes that victims of systemic crimes deserve reparations, even if some members of the victim group were complicit. For example, Holocaust reparations were not denied because some individuals collaborated with Nazis.

@Rogue Lawyer, pls get real. Do you expect our own pompous Kwaku Dua who thinks he was anointed to tell us about the vile and despicable actions of his ancestor?. Well, the European traders had records. .It might be uncomfortable for us to read but that is precisely what happened, The Chinese did not just come to Ghana and start galamsey. They had Ghanaians actively involved .So were our utterly useless ,pompous and selfish Kings in the past. These are facts not fiction. And, it happened.
Expansionist Policy: Expansionist policies under kings like Opoku Ware resulted in the subjugation of neighboring tribes (such as the Bono State and Denkyira), which were frequently forced to pay tribute in slaves.
Shifting Trade Routes: While initial 18th-century trade often involved northern routes, by 1800, the Ashanti were major suppliers to coastal trading castles.
End of Trade: The trade was maintained by the state until the British destroyed the power of the Asantehene with the capture of Kumasi and exile of King Prempeh I in 1896.
The Ashanti were key players in the network, selling captives obtained through war and raiding, which was essential to maintaining their military strength and economic stability throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

get. this in your filthy dandruff head, that Asantis needed our gallant men who at that time serves as Asantis soldiers to fight the oppressor , and there were no point of time that if you are in a battle with your enemy , you would agree to sell your fighters and and strong men to them.
this is what I want people like you to think about .
That those men and women were captive from war,
some of them were been lied to for protection against the ongoing war and all their family were transported to the coast who were sold by the white men to the Americans.
The white criminals used that as a propaganda strategy to cover their wickedness.
I am asking them again
if the blacks were sold to them,- what it means was there was an agreement for ownership, why do the Whitman put those people they claimed have bought in chains before shipping them like animals to the USA and in Europe ?
if you had bought them with your money and they had became your property , is it not prudent to treat them well to avoid death and loss ?
The black families were chained because the white man knew he has taken them in captive against their will , and the option of running away is paramount .
please just use your head for once

Very simplistic argument. Slavery and sale of slaves occurred in all empire's and civilizations but a trade in slaves across the Atlantic Ocean was a market created by ship owners who were endorsed by royal households and churches. Without ships capable of crossing the ocean available to ferry slaves to the socalled new world, there would have been no Atlantic Slave Trade. Those who facilitated this horrendous trade should be held accountable.

I respect Manasseh for his hard work and take risks he takes to uncover hidden truths which have benefited the country as a whole. However l disagree with him on this score. He may cast his mind back to how the raids were organised to get our ancestors carried away into slavery. Yes those who carried out the raids were themselves slaves either psychologically and physically. They were forced by use of weapons. Some of the leaders in the raids might have benefited but they were under mental slavery.

Who sold the slaves? Even if some few Africans participated in this dehumanising practice for reasons best known to them, the fact still remains that thousands of our ebullient men and women were shipped out in shackles and were used as cheaper labour for the development the west. Can you imagine how much their labour would have cost? And can you imagine how much the west would have paid for cost of labour. Don't you Africa deserve some of reparations? Manasseh, let me also ask the question will there be sale if there is no buyer? And were they obliged to buy? This attempt to water down the applause received by the father of nation His Excellency John Dramani Mahama across the world has fallen flat. Again, your attempt to draw a nexus between the Transatlantic Slave Trade and illegal mining is mind boggling. You reserve the right to articulate your view (s) in any subject matter but it should not portray you as anti JDM. I think sometimes remaining will be good.

Manasseh want us to believe that it was a crime of the woman to have a virgina.
Thus Manasseh is telling us that the woman should have left her virgina in the house before she goes to the market.
Let's site a case concerning neocolonialism. According to declassified British secret services documents it was a crime for Ghana to setup a shipping, duckyard, airline, have free education, medical care, try to educate the adult population.
Thus in 1966 all that was uprooted on 24th February, 1966. It's a fact that from documents available and from my own personal observations, the idea of making a coup against your oneself was not Colonel Emmanuel Kotaka's own thought if Western and Israeli secret services did not recruit him.
The other time the President of Rwanda Paul Kagame said that he country will not buy used clothings from America and else where.
The US President Donald Trump said that he will apply sanctions against Rwanda.
I met Mr. Deku years ago and he confided in me that he joined the coup under duress.
So Mr. Manasseh stop challenging John Mahama.
I should have gone to the US in 1984 if not that I prefer to die for Ghana how bad it is than be an agent of the CIA. CIA threatened that it will shootdown the Soviet aircraft on which I will be returning to Accra to Havana.

A greedy father sells his children into slavery to a White man , the children after all the father has done still loves the father and some of them come home to show love their motherland
Now the greedy father goes to the UN and wants money not for his neglected children but for himself. ARE WR NOT BUILDING HATRED when the story is properly told .
African leaders may be called greedy if we are not careful.

Can you hear yourself saying that our forefathers were so "not smart" that they allowed themselves to be lied to for over four hundred years, making the trade very successful that the European keep coming for slaves for all those years. Even the slaves taken did their slavery jobs so well that they become very reliable to the extent of being bred like cattle to produce slaves domestically.
Slavery was tried on some group of people but it didn't work. But for some group, it was a very successful story. To show how it worked well in Americas and Caribbeans watch this epic movie, "Goodbye Uncle Tom" - a movie condemned by both African and European intellectuals.

Manasseh's view has been my stance on this transatlantic slave trade and reparations, with a slight exception.
The greatest African beneficiaries has been the so called monarchies, chiefdoms, and kingdoms which were nothing except being created tools of the trade. Those internecine and tribal wars among Africans those times were just slave heist, which were designed and orchestrated by the European Slave Don.
Ironically, those slave trade stooges were the ones that camouflaged into colonial puppets, and now, turned, "politrikcians" - the large majority of the political class on the continent - demanding reparations.
My view about the descendants of the slaves in the Americas and the Caribbean is that their ancestors were those house-niggers that betrayed their fellows and aided the slave owners to subjugate their lot, and therefore, deserve no reparations.
So I think that this world is just about what you can do to survive, under tolerable and intolerable conditions. Bomb your neighbour if you can. Sell your mother, if it is the means to your survival. No moral questions.

In the 1840s China did not requested that the British, Dutch and Americans sell Opium to China.
What happened was that they rather accuse China of unfair trade policies and that included the refusal of the Chinese emperor to allow opium into China.
Britain, Holland and US declared war on China, ceased Hongkong, Makao, Shingai and other with arms and sold opium to the Chinese at gun point.
When a Chinese refuse to buy and sniff opium he or she was shot dead.
In 1979 when the Soviet Army went to Afghanistan the aim was to stop the cultivation of opium. That led to NATO members whose citizens trade in opium to accuse the Soviet Union of occupation of Afghanistan.
We all saw what happened later including the 11/9/2001 terrorist attack.

Some of our own African chiefs and slave raiders are partly to be blamed for this evil practice that was visited on the black race.Having admitted that, the slave trade itself was an entire economy of its own that benefited the White race in parts of Europe and the Americas for centuries and worse of all, made the black man inferior in the eyes of whites .It was cruel, evil and carried out on blacks like they were less than animals.Mannaseh failed to admit that so glaring fact .That is why people are livid and seem to be digging up some of his past works that were agenda driven like the Guinea fowls flying to Burkina Faso story and the second hand Ford expedition "gift" to President Mahama.Manasseh has no moral or ethical right to be speaking on the subject but it seems he must be heard all the time in the media.A man who wants to be seen as truthful always yet refuses to see when his spiritual father, the respected pastor Mensah Otabil gets it wrong is a hypocrite.

Describing slavery as a serious crime against humanity is correct and also long overdue.
In my submission, iti s not the whites only who practised and enslaved my fellow black people; the Arabs wre and still are the worst offenders of this institution. If we seeking reparation we should seek from all ensemble those who have practised this evil. Trans sahara slave trade.
Trans Sahara Slavery is still going on . Samori and Babatu in the early 1900s were busy invading villages in the north cpaturing the natives and selling them.
So over to us. So I agree with Manasseh. Let's move on with what is left of us, guard and protect it; ensuring that it never happens again.

Pls you have a miss call
Dear Mennaseh Azzure,
The history of the transatlantic slave trade reveals a stark contrast in how it was organized and experienced across continents. In Europe, the slave trade was not a hidden or informal activity; it was a structured, state-supported enterprise that formed part of a broader national agenda. Governments sanctioned it, merchants financed it, and institutions protected it. Laws were crafted to legitimize the capture, transport, and sale of human beings, making it a fully integrated component of economic expansion. The wealth generated flowed back into European societies, strengthening their economies, building infrastructure, and advancing their global dominance.
In Africa, however, the dynamics were tragically different. The system did not operate as a unified continental agenda but rather as a fragmented and often coercive process. Some local leaders and intermediaries, driven by survival, rivalry, or personal gain, participated in the capture and sale of others. This created a painful pattern of betrayal, where weaker clans and communities became victims of stronger or more opportunistic groups. Unlike Europe, the benefits were not institutionalized or broadly distributed. Instead, they were limited to individuals or small factions, leaving the larger society destabilized and vulnerable.
The consequences of this imbalance were profound. While Europe accumulated long-term national wealth and power, Africa experienced social fragmentation, population loss, and enduring economic disruption. The legacy of these unequal systems continues to shape global inequalities today.
Understanding this distinction is essential, not to assign simplistic blame, but to recognize the structural forces that turned human suffering into national prosperity for some and collective loss for others.
Yours sincerely.
The boy from upper west Region

History are facts. The Asantehene was against the abolishing of the transatlantic slave trade. The Asantehenes unprovoked, attacked their neighbors to capture people and sell them as slaves to the Europeans at the coast. They exchanged people for weapons to use in intimidating others. They today claim some Bono lands instead of compensating for their past nefarious activities.
Truly, such African slave raiding kings or societies must also render unqualified apologies for being collaborators. The Europeans admire the Asantehene for the aid they got from his predecessors during the trans Atlantic Slave trade era.
