That clearly is a high-jacking of the nation by a few privileged government officials. It's for this reason that the salaries, perks and retirement packages of this entitled usually are not made public until a scandal arises. That practice needs to scrapped. Lowly-paid Ghana workers don't even get decent pensions to sustain them in retirement, so why should these highly paid people be entitled to their salaries and perks in retirement when they made more than enough to save for their retirement?

Under Article 71 of the 1992 Constitution, the following categories of officeholders are entitled to pensions or salary continuation after leaving office:
Executive
- President of the Republic of Ghana
- Vice President of the Republic of Ghana
- Ministers of State (including Regional Ministers)
- Deputy Ministers
Legislature
- Speaker of Parliament
- Deputy Speakers of Parliament
- Members of Parliament (MPs)
Judiciary
- Chief Justice
- Justices of the Supreme Court
- Justices of the Court of Appeal
- Justices of the High Court
Council of State
- All members of the Council of State
Key Point
These officeholders are constitutionally guaranteed pensions or salary continuation determined by the President, acting on the advice of a committee and in consultation with the Council of State. This is distinct from ordinary public servants, who rely on SSNIT contributions for their pensions.
How can we do this to ourselves? So, others deserve full salaries even after retirement. God save this country. Most of these officeholders steal during their tenure and still go home with full salary.

In the irredeemably corrupt and backwards Ghana Armed Forces, colonels and above retires on their salaries meaning if they were earning let's say ghc20,000 in active service, they go on retirement still earning ghc20,000 doing nothing till they die and their spouses continues from there till they also die and the baton is handed over to their wards till they turn eighteen. That's sad! Meanwhile in all this crime against the country Ghana and humanity, the soldier hitherto called the other rank labour in vain as he goes home with nothing to write home about after serving the colours for three decades. At the center of this is a so-called HONOR CODE that states that THE GOOD OF THE COUNTRY COMES FIRST ALWAYS, THE WELFARE AND GOOD OF THE SOLDIER COMES SECOND ALWAYS AND THE WELFARE AND GOOD OF THE OFFICER COMES LAST ALWAYS. This equation has been turned upside down to read THE GOOD OF THE OFFICER COMES FIRST, THE WELFARE AND GOOD OF THE OFFICER COME SECOND AND THE GOOD AND WELFARE OF THE OFFICER COME LAST. All is about the commissioned officer who knows next to nothing but tyranny and corruption.

Every African must watch the YouTube channel called "Bantucitydiaries" to understand how we are in Africa. The YouTuber just dropped an interesting piece yesterday entitled :" Africa : Incompetence Masks as Corruption". Certain things that we do on the African continent simply doesn't make sense. Why should someone continue receiving their full monthly salary as a retiree? Haven't they contributed to a pension fund during their active years as employees? Sometimes we behave on the continent as if we do not have brain in our head.

And also when a retiree do any type of work its not for free, thus he was she is paid for the work he or she does, either in the private or public sector.
The matter is that even some Ghanaians retire before going abroad to serve foreign government and companies. In those countries its provided that not depending on the age of the worker, he is entitled to some sort of gratuity.
So I don't know what Professor Prempah is talking about.
After all those monies that are paid to retired workers are monies they contributed for many years which the state invested and made profit on.

Resetting our nation must begin with this Article 71. The unnecessary spending of our revenue on some people must stop. It's like monkey de work baboo de chop. Akuffo Addo raised his salary to 79% parliamentarians 69-74% and workers 4%. How can this be possible? There should be strong ammendments in the constitution to reduce the cost thise beneficiaries. The citizens of the nation deserves a better living. The salaries for the normal workers are too small.
