As Ghana celebrates its heritage and achievements during Ghana Month, it is important to remember the remarkable individuals whose contributions helped shape the country’s identity. One such person is Theodosia Salome Okoh, the woman who designed Ghana’s national flag.
Theodosia Salome Abena Kumea Okoh was born on June 13, 1922, in Wenchi. She was the daughter of Emmanuel Victor Asihene, a respected educationist and clergyman.
She had her early education at Achimota School, one of the most prestigious schools in the country at the time. After completing her education, she trained as a teacher and developed a strong passion for art.
In 1957, as Ghana prepared to gain independence from British colonial rule, the country needed a national flag that would symbolise its freedom and new identity.
Theodosia Okoh submitted a design that was later selected as the official national flag of Ghana.
Her design featured three horizontal stripes of red, gold, and green with a black star positioned in the middle.
The colours were carefully chosen to reflect important aspects of the country’s history and resources.

The red represents the blood shed by those who fought for Ghana’s independence, the gold symbolises the country’s rich mineral wealth, and the green represents the nation’s forests and natural resources.
The black star at the centre stands for African freedom and unity.
The flag was officially adopted on March 6, 1957, the day Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence.
Beyond designing the national flag, Theodosia Okoh also made significant contributions to sports development in the country. She served as the first president of the Ghana Hockey Association and worked tirelessly to promote hockey across the country.
Her dedication to the sport earned her national and international recognition, and she played a major role in developing hockey in Ghana.
In honour of her contributions to sports, the national hockey stadium in Accra was named the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium.
Theodosia Okoh passed away on April 19, 2015, but her legacy continues to live on through the national flag that flies proudly across Ghana and around the world.
