Veteran journalist and Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has raised concerns over reported plans for foreign military involvement in Ghana’s fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking on the issue in a recent programme, Pratt questioned recent reports suggesting that French soldiers could be deployed to Ghana to help combat the menace. He expressed doubt about the relevance of such assistance.
“Only last week, there was this news report about French soldiers coming here to teach us how to fight galamsey. And I’m wondering, French soldiers, what do they know about galamsey?” he quizzed.
According to him, Ghana must be cautious about deepening military cooperation with Western powers under the pretext of security support. He argued that such engagements may not serve the long-term interests of the country or the West African sub-region.
“The hanky-panky games we are playing with Western militaries in Ghana are not in our interest. It is not in the interest of West Africa and cannot be in the interest of Africa,” he stated.

Pratt further called for what he described as a reassessment of Ghana’s military partnerships, including the presence of foreign forces in the country.
He urged citizens to demand greater transparency and accountability from the government regarding defence agreements.
He also made reference to the alleged presence of a United States military base in Ghana, calling for their recall.
