While the director may be right, but the truth is his solution is currently untenable in our realities in Ghana. Even people who's ailments aren't self inflicted have difficulties getting treatments, let alone those who voluntarily go out to over-indulge in substance that cause them ailments. The country has so many problems, self indulged ailments is not a priority, but law enforcement and safety of citizens are. So what is the IGP to do.

Really appreciate Dr. Yennusom Maalug, Director of Pantang Hospital, for calling for a more compassionate and effective approach to the drug challenge in Ghana. His emphasis on treatment, rehabilitation and addressing the root causes of substance abuse is forward-thinking and aligns with global best practices in public health. Rather than focusing only on punitive raids, building strong mental health services and community support can create lasting change. Well done for bringing an important health perspective to this national conversation

Medical and public health experts globally recognise drug dependence and addiction as complex health and social conditions rather than merely criminal behaviour.
Substance use disorders are driven by intertwined neurological, psychological, and socioeconomic factors, requiring coordinated clinical care, counselling, rehabilitation, and social reintegration. While the IGP’s raids may demonstrate enforcement capacity, they are largely reactive and lack systematic involvement of health professionals and clear referral pathways into treatment and recovery services.
As a result, such operations fail to address the root causes of substance use, do not ensure continuity of care after arrest, and risk perpetuating cycles of criminalisation and relapse instead of achieving sustainable recovery and public safety outcomes.
What the Dr. is saying is true but if you're not inclined in health and rehabilitation related issues, you may not understand it

I believe the suggestion by the Specialist in Mental Health should be seriously considered. What ultimately becomes of the person is more important than their current condition. The measures put in place to support individuals struggling with drug use and abuse are paramount.
When we reflect on this, we must ask: how many rehabilitation centres do we actually have in the country, especially in the Northern part? This should be a national concern for all of us.
Instead of turning this into a debate centered on arresting people, we should focus on long-term solutions. Behavior modification and proper rehabilitation are what we truly need. Let us give the Doctor’s suggestions the attention and implement them thoughtfully the results will speak for themselves.

IGP doesn't only arrest addicts, he arrests sellers/suppliers who mostly aren't addicts. Build a million rehab centers but without stopping the sale of the drugs, more and more youth will be hooked. Igp is doing his bit excellently, ask others to do their part too.
