I am sorry and sad for his situation. I was fortunate to attend Secondary School at Okuapemman which was close to School for the Blind. Occasionally, we had Night Entertainment together. It was interesting nights and I came to appreciate how intelligent some of them were. And they were extremely excellent with playing the Musical Instruments.
We also visited their school on some weekends and it was marvelous to observe that some of them were very intelligent and knew their School Campus like the back of their hands. Some could walk around without using their Walking Sticks with them
I graduated from the University of Cape Coast where I had a Degree and a Diploma in Education. Unfortunately, I didn’t study anything under Special Education. When I came to Uncle Sam’s country and wanted to teach, I had to be certified and had to take a Two Semester Course in TAKING CARE OF STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS. This demanded a lot including even studying the American Sign Language.
Our society needs to know that being Blind is not a Disability but should have Special Needs.
I don’t blame the School and the PTA because we have been taught and made to understand that being Blind is a disability. I very much remember the Nigerian Musician who could play the Piano, Organ, Drums and the Guitar. Let our Education be geared towards the mentality that being Blind is not a Disability. People who are Blind in the USA are almost allowed to do everything except Driving a Vehicle and operating a machinery. Let us accept the Blind, especially the ones in our schools as people with Special Needs and they can fit in the society and be successful.
Thank You.

@Frank Agyena, in as much we all agree that discremination to the blind is unaccepted, blindness and significant visual impairment are classified as disabilities. Under legal frameworks like the Equality Act (2010) in the UK or by the Social Security Administration (SSA) in the US, individuals registered as blind or severely sight-impaired are considered disabled. This status grants access to support, legal protections, and potential benefits.

Your assertion may be true in the UK but not in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. I am saying this with first hand knowledge. I have lived here and taught at High schools and Colleges for decades. I just retired from teaching but I go on Voluntary Teaching at certain times. The United States does not classify Blindness as a Disability but Visual Impairment and should have SPECIAL NEEDS. Similarly, people with Seizures are not considered as Disabled. They go about doing almost everything except that they are not allowed to Drive or Operate machineries. They fit well in societies and can walk around the lanes used by Pedestrians. When people with Seizures want to cross the Road, they have a Red Flag that they raise as they cross the roads. As they raise the Red Flag and cross the road, all vehicles have to stop and let them cross. Even Ambulances stop for them to cross. Ambulances with the Sirens on slow down and drive carefully around them. That makes them feel acceptable in the society.
In Ghana, we are behind schedule. People who are Blind are confined to their rooms in the family house as if Blindness is infectious. It is not the fault of people to be Blind. Let us make them feel more comfortable and acceptable in our very society and surroundings.
People who are Blind can weave Baskets and even wash their own clothes. Please, let us make them feel that they are part of us.

I have noticed that even animals have much to teach us on this. Animals never reject their own that are disabled. Whether blind or lame, they treat the disabled animal just like there is nothing wrong with it. Dogs will play with a disabled dog just like they do with all the other dogs. They don't have any problem accepting their disabled peers.

Being labeled "Disabled" does not connote being humiliated or cast out of the main stream. I also have lived many decades in the US and worked in organizations dedicated to cater for the disabled. Blindness for all intents and purpose is at all times classified as a disability. That's no humiliation but factual description that makes the so-called ABLE BODIED respect and accept the DISABLED as equals and be considerate in dealing with them in dignity. DISABILTY is never a derogatory term but rather a descriptive one.

Don’t blame the School Authorities and the PTA. The problem is with our culture and social set up. Can you count the number of families in Ghana who will willingly marry a Blind person? Even if they married before one got Blind, there are problems with the marriage and especially with the extended family members. Let our media pick it up and with our Educational System, try to educate Ghanaians that being Blind is not a crime or evil. It is just an unfortunate situation.

Our society has been dogged to improve on impairments such us being blind. Our society has been lagging behind educational advavantages such as vision impairment. Much education is needed to improve blind people's advancement.
Educationers and political leaders should do better.
