If government defaults on paying cocoa farmers who have already sold their produce to the government, that will encourage farmers to smuggle their cocoa to neighboring countries where they are paid better than their own country does. What a shame. Our government officials sit down in their offices and get paid every month , yet the cocoa farmers who sell their produce once a year cannot be paid . That is ridiculous. These Cocoa board employees are paid hefty salaries while the farmers hardly enjoy these benefits. Even the cocoa scholarships are monopolized by government officials and depriving the rightful beneficiaries of these scholarships. This must change. The minister and deputy minister of Agriculture must see to it that our cocoa farmers benefit from these scholarships.

Cocoa farming in Ghana is a thankless job. I still remember my father setting his farm on fire because the government of the day gave farmers "chits" for their cocoa instead of cash. And farmers had to wait for months. While Ecuador pays 90% of the world price of cocoa to its farmers, in Ghana, they are struggling to get 60%. And now, they are the only people forced to take significantly less than what they deserve because of an artificially strong cedi.
These are the same farmers whose cocoa dollars were used to give free education to the north while their own children went without.
2028 is not an eternity away. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me!
