President John Dramani Mahama has recalled his High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, over allegations of vote-buying against Baba Jamal during the Ayawaso East Constituency parliamentary primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The former High Commissioner was accused of inducing voters with various items, including money, motorbikes, and television sets.

When confronted about the allegation, Baba Jamal, who emerged victorious in the primaries, said there was nothing wrong with his supposed action, rejecting claims that he was using the items to induce NDC delegates to vote for him.

Following Baba Jamal’s recall, videos of people believed to be delegates carrying 32-inch Nasco TV sets surfaced.

One of the videos showed scores of people emerging from a compound holding 32-inch Nasco TV sets.

Another video showed a man bragging about getting a TV set even though he was not a delegate.

“It is about having links; it is not about being a delegate. If you know people, you will get some of the TV… I have gotten my own, secured,” he bragged in the Hausa dialect.

A third video showed a man confessing that he got the TV from the camp of Baba Jamal.

“I got the TV from Baba Jamal as a delegate… it is all part of the campaign. This is the delegate's time. This is our cocoa season, but you have to select someone who you know can help the constituency,” he said, while maintaining that the 32-inch TV set would not influence his vote.
