What an oversimplification! You level the land. Then what? When, if ever, will it regain its lost fertility?

So take your sweet time, minister!
Most of that money will probably pass under the radar anyway!

Ghana is a poor country and our leaders and politicians should not sit and allow some few and greedy individuals to destroy our forest reserves, farmlands and water bodies in the name of senseless gold mining activities for their pockets instead of stopping the destruction from the word go. There's no need to spend money to rehabilitate the degraded forests because we are not going to get back the original and complex forest ecosystems back. Our leaders and politicians have failed us because they don't understand the ecological and biological destruction of our forest reserves in Ghana.

Efficient management at the Galamsey Board can take care of this. The $214million losses at the Board could have reclaimed about 4,458 hectares out of the 5,500 hectares of this land. Anyway, government can and indeed, should henceforth plan to finance the reclamation activities of galamsey lands from the Board’s revenues. Or levy the operators to finance the reclamation.

Instead of disturbing Ghanaians with news of arrests, the government should have an aggressive forfeiture program that seeks to seize the assets of galamsey operators, and the proceeds from those seizures can used towards reclaiming the lands that they destroyed or contaminated. The owners of galamsey pits usually have assets like houses, businesses and bank accounts that can be seized, but the government often only seizes excavators and thinks that it has accomplished a huge hit with those excavator seizures. The best deterrent against galamsey is the seizure of all known assets belong to the financiers and owners of galamsey operations.
