The proposal to rename Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to Accra International Airport has sparked nationwide debate, with Ghanaians expressing mixed reactions.

On February 3, 2026, GhanaWeb TV’s Naomi Panyin Appiah-Danquah spoke to residents across Accra to gather public views on the issue. Opinions ranged from support to strong opposition.

Supporters of retaining the current name argue that it honours General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a key figure in Ghana’s history, and has become a well-known national symbol.

A local businessman noted that while a new name could reflect progress, the existing name is already widely recognised.

“It's time we recognise the contributions of those who have shaped modern Ghana. A new name could symbolise our progress, but maintaining the current name is fine with me since it's the name we know for the airport, whether in Ghana or nationwide,” he told GhanaWeb TV.

Others, however, believe the name no longer reflects Ghana’s present values and aspirations.

Opponents of the change raise concerns about preserving history and the financial cost of renaming, including updating signage and official documents.

A history teacher described the move as “erasing a part of our history,” adding that funds could be better spent on infrastructure and social services.

The debate has also sparked suggestions for alternative names, including Kwame Nkrumah International Airport, JJ Rawlings International Airport, and Black Stars International Airport.

One respondent said the latter could help avoid future disputes.
