He had become more popular than Nkrumah, and something had to be done to eliminate him. Anyone can go to the National Archives records and read about the report that came out when Nkrumah was overthrown in 1966.

Brigadier Michel and Major General Charles Mohammed Barwah are the only two Ghanaian soldiers to have barracks named after them. Michel Camp, Tema and Bawah Barracks, Tamale. Gen. Barwah was shot and killed by Afrifa during the February 24, 1966 coup. There was no justification for Afrifa shooting him to death after he surrendered at his Burma Camp residence. The same fate was visited on Afrifa when he was executed by a firing squad.
