Some lessons worth noting all of us (GHfuo): Early signs of Parkinson’s can be subtle, such as hand tremors, stiffness, slower movements, balance changes, softer speech, small handwriting, or ongoing fatigue and mood changes. Noticing these early and staying in touch with a doctor can help manage symptoms and maintain quality of life.
While Parkinson’s has no cure yet, many treatments, gentle exercise, and emotional support can make a real difference. What matters most is care, patience, and kindness. Mr Cudjoe, know that you are valued, you are loved, and you matter far beyond this illness. Ghana is walking beside you every step of the way.

The sight of shaking hands often raises immediate concern, and in many cases, fear. Parkinson’s disease is frequently the first condition people think of when tremors appear. While Parkinson’s is a serious neurological disorder that deserves public attention and understanding, it is important to be clear: hand tremors alone do not automatically mean Parkinson’s disease.

Parkinson’s is a progressive movement disorder that develops gradually over time. Tremor is only one possible symptom, and it usually occurs when the hand is at rest. More importantly, it is commonly accompanied by other signs such as slowed movement, muscle stiffness, reduced arm swing while walking, changes in handwriting, facial expression, or speech. Many individuals live with the condition for years before receiving a confirmed diagnosis, as early symptoms can be subtle and easily overlooked.

What is often misunderstood is that most tremors are caused by conditions other than Parkinson’s. Essential tremor, one of the most common movement disorders worldwide, typically occurs during action—such as holding an object or writing—and is not life-threatening. Anxiety, stress, medication side effects, thyroid disorders, fatigue, and even excessive caffeine intake can also cause noticeable shaking. Some tremors are temporary, others manageable, and many entirely benign.

This is why self-diagnosis and public speculation can be harmful. Assuming Parkinson’s without medical confirmation can create unnecessary anxiety, stigma, and misinformation. Tremors should prompt medical evaluation, not immediate conclusions. A proper diagnosis can only be made through clinical assessment by a trained healthcare professional, often a neurologist, who can evaluate the full pattern of symptoms and rule out other causes.

The real issue is not whether tremors equal Parkinson’s, but whether people feel informed and empowered to seek medical advice when changes in movement occur. Early evaluation matters. It allows for reassurance when the cause is harmless and timely treatment when intervention is needed.

As awareness around neurological conditions grows, accuracy must lead the conversation. Shaking hands should invite understanding and care—not fear. Encouraging clinical assessment, reducing stigma, and sharing correct information are essential steps toward better public health outcomes.
