If I tell you about my own sacrifices in the US working double jobs and single-handedly paying for their education with no government grants. I have three of them, and one is now accomplished lawyer working for a top- notch law firm in Manhattan, New York. The other two work as Financial Analysts for JP Morgan. They surprised me with similar gifts of appreciation when I retired in June of last year. That’s not a show-off. It’s acknowledgement by the kids of the immense sacrifices some parents go through for their children.

It is a real problem when you must deal with very ignorant people, sadly including friends and even relatives who are quick to criticise or condemn someone for achieving something. It is amazing when those who make the most critical comments are the ones who have no personal knowledge of you as a person or have no idea of what is involved in living and working abroad since they have never lived there themselves.
With very few exceptions, most Ghanaians living abroad who have achieved significant financial success or success in their career or vocation have done so through sheer hard work often against unimaginable odds. These courageous individuals achieved something big despite having to deal with the hurdles and difficulties that come with being an outsider (an immigrant person of colour living and working in a predominantly white population). It is no exaggeration to say that to make it in the West as a black African you often need to work twice as hard and twice as smart to excel in an environment that often appears hostile. This is particularly true of North America (USA and Canada) or in Europe (UK and Mainland Europe). To be successful in these environments you will need to be highly disciplined and focused on your goals, be resilient, tenacious, learn to overcome adversity and setbacks, learn from your mistakes and always have integrity. Generally, as already mentioned above you will find that you need to work harder and smarter and for longer hours sometimes. Honest hard work is critical.
WHATEVER YOU DO REMEMBER THAT THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS TO TRUE SUCCESS IN ANY WORTHWHILE ENDEAVOUR ANYWHERE AND ESPECIALLY IN THE WEST.THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS TO RICHES. MOST SHORTCUTS (CHEATING, SCAMMING OTHERS, FAILING TO PAY YOUR TAXES, STEALING, HUMAN TRAFFICKING, DRUG DEALING ETC ETC) ALL INVARIABLY HAVE ONE DESTINATION- A LONG RESIDENCE IN JAIL.
