Hmmmm. We have too many holidays for a small country like Ghana. Uncle Sam has a great number of holidays. You can decide to take some of such holidays but will not be paid for taking such holidays.
Some workplaces are very strict on such holidays, especially if your service is needed. In such situations, people who work on such holidays are paid for a time and a half on hour. Places like the Emergency places at some hospitals are paid double salaries because their hospitals. Let us look carefully at the many unneeded holidays, especially the Political ones.

In Uncle Sam’s place workers can take declared holidays but not all of them are paid holidays. I remember that at my wife’s workplace, paid holidays were for Christmas, Easter, and Independence days. One can take the declared holidays but be assured that you will not be paid because you did not work on such days. Uncle Sam doesn’t toy with productivity and production.
