The Peki Leadership: Under the leadership of Kwadzo Dei I (the Chief of Peki), the Krepi states organized a massive rebellion against Akwamu.

Kwahu Support: The Kwahu people, who also wanted to weaken Akwamu and resist the growing power of the Asante Empire, provided strategic support. Although the Kwahu were technically under Asante influence at the time, their interests aligned with the Krepi.

The Result: The combined resistance successfully defeated the Akwamu forces, driving them across the Volta River to their current home (Akwamu Fie). This victory created a lasting sense of brotherhood between the Kwahu and the Krepi (Peki) that persists in oral traditions today.

3. Colonial Period: Economic and Religious Ties

As the British consolidated power in the late 19th century, the bond shifted from military to socio-economic cooperation.

Trade Networks: The Kwahu became famous as the "merchants of the mountains." They established trade routes that linked the coast to the interior, passing through Krepi territories. They traded salt, fish from the Volta, and later, European manufactured goods.

The Basel Mission: Both regions were heavily influenced by the Basel Missionaries. The missionaries established schools and churches in both Kwahu (Abetifi) and Krepiland (Peki/Ho). This shared educational background created a new class of "educated elites" from both groups who worked together in the colonial administration and the cocoa industry.

Migration and Cocoa: During the cocoa boom (early 1900s), many Kwahu farmers and traders moved into the fertile lands of the Volta Region, while Krepi laborers and traders moved into Kwahu markets. Intermarriage became common during this era, further blending the two identities.
