He gets into these situations to give the optics or the appearance that his chieftaincy is above others, which is false. This man pretends to want peace but can't be peaceful with Dormaahene. This reality show, like everything else in Kumasi was to visually elevate himself in people's consciousness in the public domain, not necessarily to solve any problems, though he will rightfully take the credit if the problem gets solved.

Serous doesn't know his history. It is rather the Colonialist (British) who exploited the hospitality of the Kussasi people who are the owners of Bawku but did practice centralised chieftancy. The British elevated the Mamprusi people who were mere settlers at Bawku to establish kingdom there to enable them to practice indirect rule. As acephalus society, it difficult for the British to control them. So when they noticed the Mamprusi people who were not the indigenes but were organised and had a chief as the central authority, the British exploited that and made the Mamprusi chief powerful in Kussasi homeland to help their colonisation agenda!
Nkrumah, as part of the decolonization took the steps to dismantle the British indirect rule agenda using the Mamprusi chief in Bawku.
So, Sekou, get your facts right! Your dad did not exploited anything...it was rather the British colonial government who exploited the decentralised system of the Kussasi people to establish a centralised traditional leader using the Mamprusi people to control Bawku through indirect rule. Your father knowing history, reset it to the original system.
Let me ask. Who established the system you claim it was there and your father came to exploited it? We have Anglo chief in Kumasi but it doesn't mean an Anglo can become the Otumfour or king of Kumasi and for that matter Ashanteman! Same as the case of Bawku. The fact that you have Mamprusi chief in Bawku (homeland of the Kussasi) to rule over the small Mamprusi people doesn't mean the Nayiri of Nalerugu can exert his authority over the entire Bawku traditional area. This is supported by the outcome of the Commission set by your father, the supreme Court ruling and recent Otumfour mediation report!
Sekou, get your facts right, track back your research to precolonial era and do your assessment of the available records until and you will get to know that your dad did nothing wrong, it was British Colonial rule who created the mess we found ourselves.

He just continued from where the colonialist ended. It was the NLM that decided to give it back to the Mamprugu people. The PNDC and NDC came to power went back to empower the Kusasis to create this conflict again. Akuffo Addo decided not do anything about it politically because he was a CPP man who will never touch anything Nkrumah has ever done. NDC during the campaign exploited this for power. The truth of the matter is the land and the Bawku Naba belong to the Mamprugu kingdom. I did history and the history doesn’t support the Kusasis. We use history events and wars to claim a land and kingdom. Those who fought and claim that land are Mamprugu not Kusasis.

Sekou is 100% correct that Nkrumah and his CPP created the Bawku Chieftaincy mess just as they did in many places in Ashanti Region by appointing CPP Partisants to be chiefs when they had no royal blood. This nonsense was reversed in Asante traditional jurisdictions after Nkrumah was overthrown, but with the Central strong Chieftaincy system in Asanteman, the protracted Chieftaincy disputes have been avoided unlike Bawku and other places.
With the Bawku enclave, the Kusasis were the first ethnic group to settle there. However, they were no organized with a Central figure as a chief. They rather preferred living independently with no figurehead. This living choice made them weak against other groups. They were attacked by such an opposing group and had to seek assistance from the Mamprusi chief from Mamprusi land. When the Mamprusi people rescued them from their attackers, the Mamprusi chief installed a chief(a Mamprusi) at Bawku as a central figure, which remained for over 300yrs before Kwame Nkrumah stepped in to pick a Kusasi CPP supporter to be chief, and that resulted in Chieftaincy violence ever since

So when Nkrumah came to the scene, even though politics would be involved, Nkrumah who rooted out imperialism from Ghana wouldn't want any ethnic group or tribe practicing the same against their own black brothers, that would have defeated the main objective of the Nkrumah's government, and give the colonial masters a tool for propaganda.
Think of it this way, assuming any of us decide to sack somebody for wrong doing, then later you are found doing the same wrong for which someone was sacked. That will be cowardly and unintelligent; that was the case for Nkrumah, hence the reason why all the chieftaincy issues that sort to oppress fellow Blackman against the other was never entertained. Because we are unintelligent we think Nkrumah did wrong.

With this kind of our mindset, no wonder the whites will rule over us till thy kingdom come. Amazingly Nkrumah predicted all these accurately; but for his own son to have been indoctrinated this level even beats the devils mind.

The Bawku situation is an absurdity: a belligerent foreign kingdom takes advantage of the acephalous nature of a peaceful society to install a chief to rule lands that they did not conquer. The indigenous people didn't mind them initially because they thought "We keep our land and life; why fight?" The British maintained the status quo because it was convenient for them and favored their indirect rule. But along the line, the indigenous people said enough was enough and appealed to Nkrumah. Nkrumah killed two birds with one stone: he corrected colonial era injustice and at the same time, strengthened support for his party among the indigenous people. Yes, his intervention intensified simmering tensions but even if the colonial status quo had been maintained, tensions between the two groups were likely to escalate over time because political authority favored one group while land and indigenous legitimacy remained with the other group.

It's by lineage! Again, we all know that traditional boundaries and regional boundaries are different. We have chiefs far away in Bono-Ahafo region under Asantehene. We have chiefs/paramount chiefs in North-East under the Yaa-Naa, and we have paramount chiefs in Upper-East like the Tongo, Bongo, Zuarungu, Bolga, and Bawku (until 1957) etc, under the Nayiri. We also have chiefs in Bono and Northern regions under the Yagbonwura. No where is it stated that chieftaincy is determined by majority of people in the area. Example, you don't go and settle in Asante, reproduce to outnumber the asantes and then lay claim on the stool in the name of right to self rule/determination. This is the simplest way I can put it for people who don't understand the nature of the conflict. But this is exactly what the government seeks to achieve with the aid of the Asantehene mediation report. The Supreme Court is the law, but judges can err in the interpretation of the law. Yet, that didn't solve the problem. I am glad Sekou owned up to the sins of Nkrumah, and I encourage him to asked all those affected to forgive his late father. What we really have to do is to be guided by history, and pursue the truth to resolve thus conflict. Lets put politics and personal interests aside.

Post Gold Coast, Asante was an independent and well organized empire, with emissaries in European countries like the Netherlands, Denmark and England. Asante was exporting her own timber and gold. In 1946, Asante agreed to merge its separate administration with the Gold Coast Colony, become a primus inter pares among the three and eventually four entities that formed the Gold Coast, and jointly Ghana in 1957. So, for Sekou to declare his lack of understanding why the Asantehene stands out among traditional leaders in Ghana surprises me. Anyone can cross-check these facts before responding with vitriol.

The Committee was chaired by lawyer Seth Opoku Afari from Worawora. Two chiefs were members and they were Nana Agyemang Badu Omanhene of Dormaa Traditional Council and Lure Kanton 111, Tumu Koro. Their findings were that the Mamprusis were settlers and affirmed Abugurago Azoka as the Bawku chief. Mumuni. Then Mumuni Bawumia a Mamprusi and the then MP for South Mamprusi East and others appealed against the findings of the Opoku Afari Committee report at the high court. The high court on technical grounds set aside the findings of the Opoku Afari Committee. They appealed against the ruling of the High Court and the Appeal court presided over by Sir Kobena Arko Korsah the first Ghanaian Chief Justice, Gilbert Granville Sharp QC and William Bedford Van Lare overturned the ruling of the High Court and affirmed Abugurago Azoka as the Bawku chief.In 1966 after President Nkrumah 's overthrow, the National Liberation Council without any investigations ousted Abugurago Azoka with NLCD 112 of 1966.Then Rawlings restored Abugurago Azoka as the Bawku chief with PNDCL 75 of 1984. And in 2025, Otumfour Nana Osei Tutu the Asantehene has affirmed Abugurago Azoka as the Bawku chief.

All the hatred, jealousy of JB Danquah towards Nkrumah including his coalition with those who wanted to assassinate Nkrumah can not be overlooked just by a letter. When Nkrumah gave JB Danquah a chance in previous years when he was detained, he rather used the opportunity to go to the USA embassy to ask for his traitorous stipend or salary. As a traitor as he was, even when Nkrumah released him for the sake of respect (for being a strong academician) he rather chooses the kindness of Nkrumah to cause further sorrow against Nkrumah.

However, I personally believe since this a mediation to solve a crises that legal means have not been able to solve, the Otumfour should have recommend that at least just a single town apart from bawku itself be given to the nayiri, then the map of the kusassi traditional area will be redrawn to exclude that town or village, so that nayiri can install his chief on that conceded town whiles Azorka continues his reign as bawku naaba and head of the remaining kussasi traditional area. Redemarcation is not a problem after all the 10 regions of ghana was remapped into 16 regions by Akuffo Addo. This would have been a win win situation for both parties and lasting piece would have ensured. The wise king Solomon in the Bible made attempt to divide both a living baby and a dead baby to bring peace between the two prostitutes in the bible. The case where Kussasis get everything and mamprusis get nothing, and the government forcefully removing the rival chief from bawku, though may be the position of the law, may not bring satisfaction to the other side and the needed peace this otumfuor mediation seeks to achieve may be elusive.

Serous claimed to have researched around the issue he is talking about, he should have extended his research to know the chieftaincy structure and come to why the Asantehene is called the King and why is he exalted above the other Chiefs both locally and internationally. How can Sekou sit behind the micro and say that Asantehene has about 5 or 6 Chiefs under him and that he is equal to any other chief elsewhere apart from Ashanti Region. When you talk about Asantehene, Serous should know that he is talking about Asanteman and not the Ashanti Region created by his father. There is a saying that," the problems that are created cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created the problem, hence the maxim, thinking outside the box". How can the same Political posture that created the issue about the Bawku Chieftaincy be given to the same Political posture and ideology to redefine the same tradition it sought to destroy over the years for their selfish interest. So when Nkrumah came to the scene, even though politics would be involved, Nkrumah who rooted out imperialism from Ghana wouldn't want any ethnic group or tribe practicing the same against their own black brothers, that would have defeated the main objective of the Nkrumah's government, and give the colonial masters a tool for propaganda.
Think of it this way, assuming any of us decide to sack somebody for wrong doing, then later you are found doing the same wrong for which someone was sacked. That will be cowardly and unintelligent; that was the case for Nkrumah, hence the reason why all the chieftaincy issues that sort to oppress fellow Blackman against the other was never entertained. Because we are unintelligent we think Nkrumah did wrong.

Please when the crisis erupted, in 1957, Nkrumah then Prime Minister set up the Opoku Afari Committee to go into the case. Lawyer Seth Opoku Afari who chaired the committee was from Worawora. Two other chiefs who were members of the Committee were Nana Agyemang Badu 1. Omanhene of Dormaa Traditional Council and Lure Kanton 111 Tumu Koro. Their findings were that the Mamprusis were settlers and affirmed Abugurago Azoka as the Bawku chief. Mumuni Bawumia, a Mamprusi and the Northern People's Party MP for South Mamprusi East and others appealed against the findings of the Opoku Afari Committee report at the high court. On technical grounds the highcourt set aside the findings of the Opoku Afari Committee report. They appealed against the high court ruling at the Appeal court, then the highest court in Ghana. The Appeal court presided over by Sir Kobena Arko Korsah, the first Ghanaian Chief Justice, William Bedford Van Lare and Granville Sharp Q C overturned the ruling of the High Court and affirmed Abugurago Azoka as the Bawku chief. Then President Nkrumah was overthrown on 24th February 1966. The National Liberation Council that took over from President Nkrumah , without any investigations ousted Abugurago Azoka with NLCD 112 of 1966. Then Rawlings by PNDCL 75 of 1984 restored Abugurago Azoka as the chief of Bawku. Then in 2025, Otumfour Sir Nana Osei Tutu has also affirmed Abugurago Azoka as the Bawku chief. Please Sekou Toure Nkrumah, the then Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah did not trigger the Bawku crisis. When the crisis erupted, with the approval of the Governor General, his boss established the Opoku Afari Committee to go into the case and the Prime Minister and his Governor General implemented the Opoku Afari Committee report. Please Sekou Toure Nkrumah, the then Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah did not trigger the Bawku crisis. When the crisis erupted, with the approval of the Governor General, his boss established the Opoku Afari Committee to go into the case and the Prime Minister and his Governor General implemented the Opoku Afari Committee report. Please the Opoku Afari Committee report was challenged at the high court and the Appeal court, the highest court of Ghana affirmed Abugurago Azoka as the Bawku chief

Nkrumah brought dictatorship to Africa that is why there are no peace in Africa continent. He killed his opponents and tried to arrest Busia. I don't blame Kotoka, Afrifa, and Ankra to remove him from power. For me he is not a hero as many Ghanaians find it. Dr. JB Danquah is my hero. God bless Dr. K. A Busia, and the freedom fighters.
