Ghanaian school children hardly eat sallad with the meals served. Always carbohydrates to fill the belly. No wonder our children are stunted.

This is nothing new. It had been going on over the years with technical, financial and material support from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Partnership for Child Development (PCD), Send Ghana (NGO) and the Ministry of Health. Caterers were taught about recipes and the right servings per meal, necessary to meet a child’s nutritional needs for a day. The eradication of malnutrition among children of school going age, particularly those of 12years and below in the high poverty rate areas, is one of the main goals and a key component of the School Feeding Programme. Malnutrition is known to affect brain/mental development and learning outcomes of children 12 years and below.
Funding is the main problem of GSFP, such as:
(1) Low Feeding Cost per child paid to the caterers;
(2) Regular/constant delays in the release of funds by the Ministry of Finance. This seems to have become chronic over the years and over the political administrations. They do not make it a priority. This affects the quality and quantity of the meals.
Another problem is the politicisation of the programme, with frequent changes in the programme leadership and caterers. The caterers, having been trained with public funds, like what is happening now, are discarded after a change in government. As if they cease to be citizens of Ghana.

The School Feeding Secretariat usually ignores the Headteachers who are expected to report on the activities of the Caterers and their cooks to the District, Zonal, Regional and National.
