The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has announced that Ghana’s green building agenda has reached a record high of one million square metres of certified green building space.

According to the Corporation, Ghana moved from recording zero certifications to one million in 2025.

Speaking to GhanaWeb Business on the sidelines of the IFC-EDGE Designing for Greater Efficiency (DfGE) Programme Close-Out on December 12, 2025, IFC Technical Lead Paul Kwesi Ocran described the progress as “tremendous,” noting that Ghana has advanced from near-zero certification levels to becoming one of the continent’s strongest performers in resource-efficient construction.

He explained that when the programme began in 2017, Ghana had only two certified green buildings, representing about 40,000 square metres.

"From zero in 2017 to one million square metres today. That is significant, and it cuts across almost all building typologies. You find warehouses in there, you have hospitals in there providing critical care. You will find homes in there," he said.

Ocran added that the growth has been broad-based, spanning nearly every building typology in the country.

He further emphasized that the programme currently operates with seven models, all designed to help buildings achieve measurable reductions in energy, water, and material use.

Ghana’s achievement underscores the rising demand for sustainable construction and reinforces the country’s commitment to climate-friendly development within the built environment.
