I support Kofi Asare 100%. I think our problem as Africans and for that matter Ghanaians is that, we copy blindly from the West.
I remember back in my secondary school, our physics master who was a white man (an American) started praising Ghanaian students during one lesson.
It all started when we got to the physics laboratory and it was locked (as he used to keep the keys to the lab) and we had to wait for him. All of a sudden, he appeared pushing his bicycle towards the lab(as he used to ride bicycle to come and teach). As he was pushing this bicycle towards the lab, one of us ran to him and collected the bicycle from him by way of helping him.
So when he came in and started teaching, at a point he stopped and started praising us, citing what the other student did by coming to assist him at the time he was pushing his bicycle coming to the lab. He indicated that back in his country, the United States, a student will never do that to the teacher. He went on to tell us the kind of vices that take place in his country amongst high school students, including insulting teachers and walking out of the class because the teacher is teaching a topic he doesn't like, coming to sit and smoke in the class us teaching is going on. There was this issue he mentioned and all us got alarmed...............some students carrying guns to the class and can even shoot and injure the teacher or kill the teacher. When we got alarmed at this, he asked 'don't you read the papers?'
The time that we were getting these praises was the time they were still caning students at the basic and second cycle institutions.
At times is difficult to understand we humans, if God Himself allows caning, how can we say it should be abolished.
Now we see Ghanaian students trading blows with their teachers just because they made attempts to seize their phones for not concentrating in class. We now see Ghanaian students stabbing each other in school, carrying all kinds of weapons to school...........now American in Ghana.
There is 'nothing' that has no advantages and disadvantages. Caning will come with its disadvantages, how about pulling guns and knives in schools?
So is about time this caning thing is brought back to ensure discipline amongst students.
The other thing to blame is still the smart phones, whilst a teacher is caning a student, other begins to record, and then is put on social media and then this teacher is condemned to hell. Those days there weren't smart phones, were teachers not caning students?
Were they dying?, were they performing poorly?
So I think our stakeholders need to take a second look at this and bring the caning back, no phone usage from basic to second cycle institutions.

Many Ghanaians said that the usage of mobile phones in secondary schools should not be banned because, in this digital technological age, students would need the mobile phones for their studies and research but we have all seen the negative effects of these mobile phones in our schools. Even university students are not able to prioritise their studies over the usage of mobile phones. The usage of mobile phones is seriously affecting teaching and learning activities in our schools. Students use their mobile phones for tik tok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat activities in the night, instead of learning during their prep hours

Sometimes, we can do it through guidance and counseling.
Text books are drafted to include research work which can be done through Internet, we don't have computers in labs and libraries so without mobile phones a gap is created in the learning process.
How do we orientate and organize the students should be our priority and brainstorm.
Things we plant in the minds of children is what germinate and bear fruits. There is too much sexual talk on our airways, movies and talk shows. Let's regulate this and see if there will be a change our society.

Mr.Asare the problem is not with the use of mobile phones alone but indicipline on the part of our students and some teachers alike. Ever since students were told they have rights but were not told to be responsible for their rights to be accorded them say the decline in academic standards. I stand to be corrected those tablets procured have not been given to students. I know of Okuapeman because I have a daughter there.
