So you see why we say some Ghanaians are wicked? Like the Kenkey sellers and all. People are going around saying why is the price of kenkey still high when the dollar and inflation has come down. Smh

They have to do math, it should make sense. If at source is very expensive how can consumers afford. Do math and government support them

They should all turn into kenkey sellers to kill the kenkey market too. Those people are ripping us off.

Should we be surprised maize prices fluctuate so wildly? I am not because after almost 70 years of independence all our talk about agriculture has been hot air. Tell me what consumer commodity have we been able to organise on a national scale? What consumer commodity do we store on a national scale? Or even on a local scale? Have maize farmers organised themselves on a national or local scale?
The answer is none. We have the answers. We know what we should do. Don't we?
I was born 88 years ago and since I could go to the market basic food items such as tomatoes, garden eggs, peppers, onions, you name it, have been bunched together either as handful, or four together never weighed. The yam seller looks at the yam and names a price or puts together two small bananas and price them at, say, ten cedis. One only have to go to the Makola market to see how these are sold. Haven't we heard of weights and measures?
Until we put into practice what we think we know, those simple solutions- storage, co-operatives, national distribution, we will continue wallowing in our poverty.

What a blessed country with wicked leaders! Yara NPK was sold at Ghc550, in some areas more . Gov't so called support fertilizer under the SIP came too late in the season for farmers, high interest loans and other services such as high cost of labour only for farmers to cry for better market. Don't be surprise to hear a gov't official or party spokesperson bragging about this as an achievement at the expense of the poor farmers. The state is paying 3 to 4 times the price to food contractors supplying food to state institutions yet can't help farmers break even let alone to make profit. Why?

DO WE HAVE GRAIN SILOS TO STORE GRAIN? 1 month ago
Do we have grain silos to store excess grain during seasons of plenty? This should be one of the most important roles of the Department of Agriculture.
FOOD SECURITY SHOULD BE A TOP PRIORITY FOR ANY GOVERNMENT!!!

The government must intervene to buy maize and preserve it or even find a means of going to the markets to sell it, just as the Farmers' Brigade use to do in the 1960s.

In some advance countries the state have what they call hot kitchen where the poor are feed.
But, wait, citizens of those countries and even those who eat from their hot kitchen will tell you that the state should not go into buying and selling of food.
But the state in those countries buy the food in raw state before employing people to cook and serve people with it.
Let those cynics come out.

1 labour for harvesting ghc100(man)
Carrier/gatherer ghc80 (woman)
Threshing per bag ghc30
Loaders ghc30
Transport from farm to market ghc50 irrespective of distance
Total 100+80+30+30+50=ghc290
Add the Cost of maize, renting of land, clearing the land, application of weedicides(twice/thrice), sowers etc. Not to mention fertilizer.
Kindly think about this and you will understand the plight of farmers in Ghana now.
