The high rate of absenteeism in Parliament is due to financial crisis. Most of these MPs are broke and are out there doing Lalasulala to survive. Most of them have huge debts sitting in their bank accounts to pay.Not surprised that some are looking for Govt Contracts to sell to make some profits. Some are also going round the security institutions notably CEPS & Ghana Immigration looking for job opportunities to sell due to the high unemployment rates. Is it not surprising that Corruption is growing in the society. Our multiparty democracy is at the crossroads soon it will collapse.

The Parliament of Ghana has supervised a system where over the years, it has created an unfair and widely divided society where at least 80% of the people earn and live on salaries of GHC1,000 and much less. If they cannot make do with their salaries in excess of GHC20,000 a month and more, then the door is their front. Most people, in any case, have lost the respect and interest that Parliament once commanded.

Mr Alban Sumana Bagbin has been in this house since 1992, is he satisfied with the performance of the august house towards national devt looking at the resources that have been wasted on them?I know Mr Bagbin has a very good bank account , but what about the ppl they represent? He shd compare the unemployment rates since 1992 to date, and he will understand why his MPs are missing in action. Most of them are broke looking for opportunities to replenish their bank accounts or are hiding from thei unemployed youth from their Constituencies.

They were voted for and not appointed .Can the speaker make them lose their positions as MPs for being absent continuously? I don’t know but can that be legally done? Hahahahaha. They should be going to court very soon. What about if they ask for absences because of sicknesses? They can claim not to have gone to any Clinic or Hospital but to OGYAKROM FETISH MEDICAL CENTER. Ghana is funny and interesting.

@Kwabena. I can not agree with you more. Well said. Bagbin is the worse Speaker of Parliament in the history of Ghana. It is ironical that he (Bagbin) who is always absent from Parliament is the very person complaining about others not attending to their parliamentary duties. How many times haven't we seen the deputy Speaker acting on his behalf in Parliament? It is surprising that there are no ongoing discussions to remove him as Speaker of Parliament.

But speaker should work with the presidency to reward the MPs who are regular and punctual with more developmental projects to serve as motivation for MPs to be regular in the Parliament house

Taking salaries for illegal absenteeism, absence without official leave (AWOL) or for no work done is a crime, just the same as taking double salary. All of them have to refund what they have willfully, negligently or ignorantly taken, but have not worked for, and they must also be publicly sanctioned or penalized. They are NOT ABOVE the law. Else they lose the moral right to interrogate, investigate or enact laws in any matter of irregularity involving other citizens, that comes before them, particularly in matters of financial irregularities before their Public Accounts Committee. They become as guilty as any culprit before them in such instances.
Our governance systems and structures must be reviewed and strengthened for better economy, effectiveness, efficiency, transparency and accountability, by (among others):
(1) Electing MMDCEs and all Assembly Members through Direct Universal Suffrage; and
(2) Reducing the number of MPs from the current 276 to about 140. There seems to be too many of them idling about.
