I lived at Tamale and Bawku before.. I don’t think he meant to disrespect people from the North. From the Traditional point of view, no matter how rich one is, and how much the person is prepared to pay for a land or even marry a woman, Cola Nuts are required for it to be done. That is only a Traditional requirement. It is also true that you can’t marry a Woman from the North without presenting Cola Nuts and Pito. You can have all the money but that Traditional requirement will be demanded.
Similarly, if you want to marry an Akyem or an Asante woman, you have to produce the required number of Bottles of Schnapps and Palm Wine. That would not be the value of the Woman but they may be required to even perform some rites for the occasion.
It is also certainly true that you cannot marry an Anlo Ewe woman, name a baby, or purchase any land or landed property without presenting AKPETESHIE. That would not be the value for what you want but the AKPETESHIE is a Traditional requirement that is demanded from Christians and Moslems and African Traditional Believers and followers..
I don’t think that the Guy will be that foolish to use COLA in a derogatory form. I am a Seventh Day Adventist and lived among their most conservative ones where some still demand Schnapps and Palm Wine on such occasions. It is sad and unfortunate that we drag Politics into everything we do now. The Guy is not foolish to belittle the People from the North during these hot Political races. Will he be that careless and foolish to do that?

I have not seen the video or heard exactly what he said so I don't know the context, so I am not trying to defend him, but maybe what he meant was in the Northern Region lands are not sold to residents, they are given out free of charge, you just need to show appreciation by presenting kola nut to the chiefs, which tradition demands, and that is a good thing, isn't it. I don't know how it works in the Northern Region, it's just my thoughts.
