The Computerized Placement System is a bogus and useless policy which must be scrapped with immediate effect. The system is inefficient, ineffective and very corrupt. How can one person, (usually the education minister and his gang of thieves and hyenas) sit behind a computer in Accra and determine who gets admitted into Wesley Girls, Holy Child, Adisco, Mfantsipim, etc, all in Cape Coast, St. Louis, Prempeh College etc, in Kumasi, St. James Seminary etc in Sunyani..........? Why should the headmaster/mistress and staff of schools not have a say in who will be attending their schools that THEY will be teaching? The whole process is corrupt. It happened then and it's happening now!
We need to go back to the old system of admissions where schools admit their own students without any involvement of POLITICIANS sitting in Accra. We can modify it a bit by setting up admission boards of each school compromising of:
1. Headmaster/mistress
2. Two staff each of each course/programme
3. The district education director and maybe
4. Assembly member for the electoral area.
We must never include politicians in the admission process. They're not educationists and are very corrupt.
This will immediately stop the concentration of large numbers of people at one place, usually (GNAT HALL) fighting to get admissions for their wards. It will also minimise the corrupt practices in the placement process as students will only go to their schools of choice to check their admission status.
In short let us DECENTRALIZE the system. TAKE OUT THE POLITICIANS WHO ARE SELLING GRADE A SCHOOLS FOR ¢20,000 and ¢30,000. The computerized school placement needs total resetting.

The whole thing has to be scraped. I think we must adopt the European model. All children must attend school within a 2 kilometres radius from their home up to shs level. Boarding system must also be abolished. It is outdated. It was necessary because their was not enough schools within reach. That is not the case anymore.
Schools must be community base. With each knowing in advance how many students will be coming through. Besides these kids are too young to leave home during their most formative years. They need to be with their families. Boarding should only be allowed after shs.

I think you got the suggestion from one of the contributers (Shai) wrong. He mentioned the system that pertains in the UK or Europe. State schools in the UK for example are established within the community. Over 80% of students walk to school. Students are admitted overwhelmingly based on a defined criteria. This criteria measures the distance from the school entrance to a prospective student's home. Using this determinant, which is referred to as the catchment area, students within the catchment area are those who are offered admission. Those students (about 10%) who failed to gain admission are those who attend other schools which may require them to travel to and from school but don't commute more than half an hour to school and back. It's possible in Ghana too, if there's proper planning and political will.

You couldn't have said it any better. This simple logic is not lost on our leaders, yet we continue to do the wrong thing, expecting different outcomes. We complain and rightly so about the cost of the free SHS policy. However, we lack the political will to scrap the boarding system, which costs more than tuition costs and a drain on the education budget. Savings to be made by scrapping the boarding system, should be reinvested in educational infrastructure to improve and raise the quality of every school and thus reduce the quest to have children placed in the so-called elite category A or B schools. Any parent who desires their wards to attend schools that offer boarding facilities, should be prepared to send their wards to fee paying independent schools called 'public schools', in the UK.

Frankie, I believe that the so-called computerized placement system is the best bet we have in the resolution of the problem at hand. That system just needs to be reprogrammed a bit better and better along each step of the way to answer to the shortcomings and needs of the problem. Let's be real, we live in a capitalist neoliberal dog-eat-dog society in which the twin evils of money and and corruption call the shots in virtually everything that we do. We must therefore shy away as much as we can, from any kind of human intervention that will only exacerbate the problem.
The times we live in today are a far cry from the genteel, which graceful period of yesteryears when self-respect, honesty, integrity and dignity mattered in all that the average citizen does. The irony of the times we live in today is that, even our own pre-school children who we thought we had brought up properly - with the encouragement of their mothers, are the ones who will angrily confront us to go and pay specific officials to make specific choice placements at particular schools possible for them. The infernally corrupt society we live in has a curious way of dragging us down from our pseudo-religious moral high ground, right back down to the control standards of Hades.
As for your proposed Admissions Board idea, bro', erase it from your mind completely. Not only is it a hangover of the glorious days of Ghana, but it also exposes your mindset and age bracket. At best, this albeit good idea will only succeed in moving the epicenter of the massive school placements corruption from the education authorities in Accra to creating instant millionaires out of each of the Admission Board members. Our only consolation about this would be that it will diversify the loot among a broader scope of beneficiaries. Oh boy, let's laugh at ourselves a little, whilst we can.

I don't agree. Every system of this nature comes with challenges but that doesn't mean the system is totally bad. The system was designed to eliminate corruption and prevent the creation of a class society regardless of performance. The selection is performance based so if your ward doesn't have the required grades to enter a particular school the system will assign him or her to another school, normally the second or 3rd choice. Can the MP tells what grades the ward got in the JSH exams? if you dont like the school your ward is placed that is when corruption comes in. That is not a system problem. It is institutional or society problem. You will see aggregate 36 ward wanting to enter Wesley girls or PRESEC legon. These are competitive schools and if you dont make 1s in all subjects you cannot enter those schools

Hahahaha. The DCEs, MCEs are even more corrupt. Paying to get the admission for a ward or child to get to preferred High School and even the preferred Course at the Universities is not something new. Even during the supposed Revolutionary Days, it was practiced. The people suggested to supervise placements into schools are also Ghanaians and corrupt too. There is not much that can be done about it. Why is it that Big Time and very rich Politicians, parents, and Traditional Authorities always get admission for their children to the Grade A schools. How did Efo Jeremiah John Rawlings get all his daughters to attend Achimota? All people are equal under the constitution but some people are more equal than others. Why were the Children of Efo, Boakye Djan, the Tsikatas and others NDC/PNDC members all gain admissions into Achimota School and not FA BRODER BETO ME CHOCK. Even to get into the Military Academy, it is not busy. One has to know somebody at a High Place or pay through. It has been like that since the Colonial days up till now.. How many parents would have that money to go pay bribe for his/her child to be admitted to a school of their choice knowing that brilliant children with good grades come from poor homes/parentage as well and deserved to be placed in good schools with competitive students?
You and others who have information about bribe paying for a better or preferred school choice should better mention one school you know that engaged in this malpractices for authorities to take it from there. Without evidence from the public, no one can fight the rot in the society.
The MP who came with this information hasn't helped either. What is he waiting for than only to jump tona radio station to rant as if what he has heard is legal?

What did you tell your constituent after he approached you? I believe a good counsel would have helped him not to pay any amount irrespective of how much is involved? It’s not a matter of asking officials to be given positions on the placement board or whatever, just report to the relevant authority with the evidence you’re alluding and the problem would be solved.

This guy is so stupid. Is being an MP or a President the highest achievements of this life. In some countries people strive and with overwhelming joy express how they feel about winning the Nobel subject prices. There are many other things people achieve in this life outside public life It is poverty and stupidity that is making people in power so socially important. This MP appears young and therefore should ask anybody who was old during the second and third Republic civilian rule if people approached their MPs for them to feel so important. One read about them and heard about them in the news on policy and law making. The ordinary person would take his trotro and go to work without begging anybody for work. A lot of stupid people say because our population has increased that is why we are not able to cope with many things. The question I ask those stupid individuals is that is it because the population of Singapore and Malaysia keep reducing that is why they are developing?

All that I will ask of you MP is treat this matter as urgent. Let the government open up complaint office for people who may have suffered this ill treatment to come and report. Fortunately for us, most of these people will have evidence of these transactions as many of the payments were done through MOMO.
I personally know a colleague who also paid 5K to get a transfer for his child. If there are opportunities in the schools, why do parents have to pay money before placement. It is so sad that we are doing this to ourselves.
Please for those calling for the abolition of the system and suggesting we go back to old system, please don't forget that the reason this system was introduced was to curb the same problem parents/students were facing at the time. The thing is systemic and if we want to deal with it as a country, what I have suggested can be a solution to this problem.
If investigations reveal those who received money as a result of placement and they are sent to court, I believe even if one wants to engage in such and activity in the future, they will think twice. Let us not forget that thousands of people may have suffered this fate. Let us take the bull by the horn and act now.
Thank you.

This was what undone the free SHS under NPP. When the president and his appointees were applauding the free SHS policy, parents were paying monies to secure placements, paying unauthorized fees, etc behind the scenes.
