guys, you have misunderstood the prof. a strong cedi must be accompanied by real growth of the economy. it makes no sense to prop up the cedi from time to time in order to record "numbers". That money is simply swallowed up and produces no tangible jobs or growth.
are you aware that due to these interventions, the GRA is making serious losses?
are businesses reducing prices when the cedi dropped from 13gh to 10gh to the dollar?
They won't reduce the prices of goods because they know its artificial and won't last.
Just last week, it traded 10gh to the dollar. today its 11.80gh to the dollar. so what was the import of the intervention. its "floating" back to its normal distribution curve.

So is this expert, economist saying that, when the value of the cedi was in a free fall in recent times, that was good for business? It's very strange that an expert rather is saying the BoG should just be a passive spectator in how the cedi fares.
What such experts fail to understand is that, the BoG's intervention is the result of how the economy is performing and it's wrong to describe this as artificial intervention. For instance, there's nothing artificial about the fact that, Ghana's gold or foreign exchange reserves increasing highly – that is indeed a true reflection of the economy and this is what the value of the cedi must show.
I hope the BoG never listens to such experts who can afford to criticise whatever the situation is as a bad thing.

I am surprised at Bopkins lecture. Look, a relatively strong cedi will automatically reduce our foreign debt ratio. Business groups will have more dollars for imports in sectors where we are disadvantaged. Nation wreckers will find no solace in hoarding dollars. What is Bopkin saying? Volatility in the cedi-dollar ration? Bopkin should tell us where this situation is constant. Why is he saying the government is taking pride in maintaining a high cedi level relative to the cedi? The appreciation of the cedi has been gradual and stable and this is good for economic expansion. Bawumia came from the classroom, propounded theories and quoted economists but performed woefully poor. There is a gab between textbook theories which are based on constant factors and
real life situations. At any rate, the government is not taking pride in its achievement at the expense of creation of jobs. Has Bobkin heard of the initiative of 24 hour economy? Does his data really say things are getting worse? He rather sounds like those little NPP politicians who tell us things were better when they were in power. Enough of this. If you really have something encouraging to say, get your views to the appropriate authorities and stop this propaganda of politics in the media.

Mr Economist,a strong cedi gives the government several advantages, government is the major purchaser of goods and services. A weak cedi means government will need more money to pay for the same goods and services which erodes any gains from high import taxes due to a weak cedi. Government collects more and pays more. Workers like you benefit from the appreciation of their salaries, a big bargaining chip for government when it comes to salary negotiations etc. Government needs to manage it's payments to producers like cocoa farmers and I think we are good to go.
