Ghana is not the only country that has a floating rate currency. That means the cedi exchange rate changes in response to market forces, especially the value of the dollar or gold.
But it is the country that is wasting its financial resources to support and defend the currency. No other country wastes its time to make its country's exchange rate everyday headline. Please remember that the cedi is only a local currency and only importers and exporters need to worry about the rate. There if the government has good economic advisers, they should guide it to invest the dollars in developing the infrastructure of the country. Releasing dollars to the market to depreciate the value of the US dollar to cause the cedi to appreciate is a short-term solution.
Since this practice started the local prices have not been affected. Nothing has changed in the local market. Only the seasonal weather has effect on prices of goods.
The lower dollar exchange rate deters Ghanaians outside the country from remitting funds to Ghana. It is not because they not patriotic, but it disturbs our budget. We have to send more £Sterling/US $ /€ Euros, to meet the needs of our loved ones.
But the question is: how much foreign reserves does Ghana hold to continue to play games. And for how long?
Let us learn and use our resources wisely instead of pleasing a section of the people. Yes, pleasing. Because when more dollars are released in the economy the rich and connected people buy and hoard them. They do not help the ordinary people.
Everyone needs to benefit from the foreign currency reserves of the country.
