The Gyaasehene of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Katakyie Adubofour Kwaw, has stated that queen mothers who wear long artificial nails and heavy makeup are flouting the culture and traditions of the Ashanti Kingdom.
According to him, per Asante customs and traditions, queen mothers play a crucial role in initiating young girls into adulthood through the performance of puberty rites.
For that reason, he said it is inappropriate for them to adorn themselves with artificial nails, eyelashes or excessive makeup.
Speaking in an interview on Opemsuo Radio, which has since been shared on social media, Katakyie Adubofour Kwaw said, “Any queen mother who is elderly or leads a community where puberty rites are performed should not be wearing long nails or makeup.
“They may do it for lifestyle reasons but it goes against Asante customs. It is never right for them to do that.”
