Let's face the fact no Ghanaian medical officer can move to USA or UK and straight start work there as doctors.They have to write professional exams which take a while to pass.It's within this period that they default bcoz they more often don't earn much to pay those loans. Some are able to come back and settle the entire amount after 2 or 3yrs.The bad ones block their ears.

I think Prof. misunderstood what John said. He didn't say 70% of doctors living and working in Ghana but 70% of those who leave their jobs in Ghana to work abroad after contracting the loans.

As for banks approaching institutions with loan packages, this is not limited to doctors.
Prof should rather sit down with John to provide the statistics and not to request an apology. Doctors are also humans and I'm aware some self-employed doctors in the country defaulted and threats of legal action made them to repay.

Awuah is right because he is speaking with data. A scheme loan to staff of a public university had to be stopped because of this problem. Health workers take loans and off they are gone without payment.

Professor Yorke you are dodging the issue. Is it not true that some doctors trained for free with taxpayers' monies have left Ghana for greener pastures without paying their loans? If it is true Mr Awuah owes doctors no apology. Rather the Medical Association of Ghana should help the Banks to get their loans paid by the defaulting runaway doctors. I personally believe that to avoid this situation continuing doctors who apply for passports must prove that they have paid any loan taken from a Bank.
