This irritating know it all judge is just exposing his ignorance. There’s no responsible small scale mining. Mining is a serious and an expensive undertaking. It should be left to companies possessing the expertise and money who can afford to restore and rehabilitate the environment. This is what mining requires:
1. The concessionaire must have a guarantee from an acceptable bank to the tune of a the amount required to restore the environment and maintain that guarantee for the life of the mine if he fails to comply with the restoration requirements. This often costs millions of dollars.
2. Records and photos of the designated are taken by the mines department and the media.
3. The company collects seeds and seedlings of native plants and trees to set up a nursery.
4. Once the land is cleared, the top soil is carefully dug up, covered and stored.
5. After extracting the ore from the pits, the soil is used to fill fillable pits. Mining engineers try to reconstruct the topography of the area.
6. The botanists then dress the area up with the stored topsoil and plant the seedlings from the nursery. They continue to water the restored area for the number of years required for the plants to establish and survive on their own.
7. Pits that are too large to be filled in are terraced beautifully.
8. The mines department and the press inspect the restored area and if satisfied, the mines department releases the company from the bank guarantee.
9. Domaahene, does this sound like the destructive child’s play which you are referring to? We were taught that every hill, mountain, lake, river, creek….even the very land on which we walk is a god. Didn’t you learn anything growing up?
