Our prisons and penal systems need resetting .
The prisons are overpopulated and not well regulated.
Our prisons need to be classified based on the level of crime with prisoners with certain crimes placed in a prison classified for such level of crime . Petty thieves cannot be housed together with murderers or those with serious crimes. Moreover our judges must start sentencing people to do community services based on their crimes to depopulate the prisons . The prison system must have jails and prisons with accused individuals sent to either of these two facilities based on the level of their crimes . Prisoners must have access to formal education or technical skills where individuals learn a trade or acquire further education so that they can be useful to society after their release. We must diversify our penal system and make it relevant to our situation.

They are supposed to be farming (crops and animals) to supplement. Some are engaged in artisan activities, that should help the prisons.

This is not the solution. It's nonsense to jail someone for 15 years and leave him to work outside after serving all these much years and work out for only 3 months to be free from prison. Any one one start working out from the first month of his or her jail to put money in Ghana prisons coffers to help build good prisons. After all all we know is any prisoner works out in 3 months to quit from prison on jobs like construction, farming, and other silly jobs. They must work fully on this job fully on thier jail terms

Its about time we stop sending the very poor who steal 3 fingers of plantain to a prison sentence of 6 months. Whilst politicians, and appointees of government agencys who head those department embezzling millions get bail conditions then end up still walking our streets. The courts should introduce community sentences where convicts can be assigned to various agencies under supervision in their locality to seeve the community be working free for certain hours depending on their crimes. This will help ease our prison bills and congestion.

When l see such pictures of inmates sleeping arrangements in our prisons l wonder if we really were given our independence from the colonial masters. This was exactly how ours earlier generation were packed into ships and boats to sugar canes etc as slaves. Can we not give pardon to majority of low risk prisons who wont be harmful to society. There is no reform in our prisons with such sleeping patterns. Rather its becoming a home breeding ground for homosexuals and lesbians by the time they are released. I applaud the prison management for the magic they have done feeding thousands of prisons on 1.80 cedis a day. The director general will be the best finance minister. Lets set up a go fund me account to raise money in assisti g our prison service or better give the money to support the pentecostal church who have done so well in building great prisons to can reform inmates not punish them. Lets get that rolling to start from at leat 1 cedis to the highest anyone can give. This is money we as a aocial can do until all prisons including nsawam get better facilities. For the murderers and armed robbers lets keep them for life . Prisons should set up community farms so the inmates can farm for their upkeep and sell the surplus to earn money for basic necessities like tooth brush, tiolet roll, sanitary towels etc.

What i can tell u on authority is that,prison doesnt change people but rather change them frm gud to bad due to poor feeding,poor medication,bad sleeping place and drugs trafficking.
