Well, won't this be a smokescreen to perpetrate the environmental destruction going on? We've been told that military guys are guarding the politically affiliated miners to do the mining in the forests. This bandage approach is bound to fail. The NDC government should listen to recommendations from experts on this issue and start by repealing L.I. 2462 which currently allows for mining in the forest reserves. These forests are called “reserves” for a reason. Next will be to have a national dialogue to include NPP, GBA, GJA and National Council of Chiefs on measures to adopt a holistic approach to this menace. Finally, Ghanaian laws should be vigorously unleashed on the Chinese and Indians who are embedded in the illegal galamsey business.
