The truth is, governments in Ghana love to create ministries that sound impressive but do very little to address real conflicts. The Bawku crisis has dragged on from government to government without resolution, because no administration has been bold enough to deal with the root causes.

It’s the same unseriousness we saw when President Mahama appointed Elvis Afriyie Ankrah as the official point-man for pastors to deliver their “visions” and “prophecies” so he could decide which ones to pass on to the president. That was politics reduced to superstition.

Now we have a Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs who is expected to resolve matters that are not only historical but sometimes also petty. What exactly can he do in the case of the tension between the Asantehene and the Dormaahene? Is he going to sit them down and say, “Let there be peace”? Without addressing the underlying grievances — whether historical boundaries, traditional hierarchy, or mutual suspicion — words alone won’t resolve anything.

At the moment, there’s no imminent clash. But the peace is fragile. If either side pushes too far beyond accepted boundaries, tensions could flare up quickly. Ghana doesn’t need symbolic ministers; it needs honest brokers who can confront uncomfortable truths and work out fair, lasting settlements.
